No Binding. Zustand: Fine. This engaging four-page letter begins as a rigorous intellectual exercise before devolving into a highly entertaining account of 19th-century domestic chaos. Addressed to Dr. Lehmann, the author, Ferdinand Lüders (Karl Ferdinand Lüders (1824-1915) dedicated his career to classical philology through translation, secondary education at a Gymnasium, and archival preservation as a librarian. His work focused on rendering ancient Greek and Latin literature accessible, teaching classical languages to youth, and organizing historical manuscripts.), provides an exhaustive analysis of two famous Latin quotations. He breaks down the syntax and historical context of Horace's Odes ("caelum ipsum petimus stultitia" - we seek heaven itself in our folly) and Virgil's Eclogues ("quae sera tamen respexit inertem"), even slipping in a witty political comparison to the reigning 89-year-old German Emperor Wilhelm I. The letter sharply pivots in its second half. With his wife away in Meran (a famous Tyrolean spa town) tending to their sick daughter, Lüders is left at home in Flensburg to manage a highly dysfunctional household. He humorously complains about his unruly sons, a clumsy Methodist nurse, and a tactless maid, culminating in a brilliant callback to his earlier Horace quote to describe the chaos. This manuscript is a prime example of educated bourgeois German correspondence during the Kaiserreich, blending high classical education with relatable social history. English Translation Summary Flensburg, Oct. 5, 86. Dear Dr. Lehmann! In response to your inquiry today regarding two classical quotes, I hasten to give you information immediately. To start with the latter, the phrase 'Caelum ipsum petimus stultitia' is known to be borrowed from the 3rd Ode of the first book of Horace, where he speaks of the arrogant daring and enterprising spirit of men. [He details the preceding verses and meaning]. The other phrase: 'quae sera tamen respexit inertem' is borrowed from the first Eclogue of Virgil v. 27, where the words of Tityrus. refer not to a late-acquired fortune (as we do with Friedrich Wilhelm IV) but to the late-acquired freedom of Tityrus. as, of course also in a slightly modified form, a casual, hesitant, deliberate, narrow-chested man of our nearly 90-year-old Emperor could also be designated. [Page 3-4] My wife has been staying in Meran for a good eight days now, where she has accompanied our daughter, who was unfortunately not well at all here. Now I sit here again. struggling with two wild, hard-to-manage boys, a well-meaning but clumsy merciful Methodist sister Miss and a tactless maid, who are both mostly on a war footing with the boys. nothing helps: 'caelum ipsum petimus stultitia neque sinunt iracunda patrem ponere fulmina!' Read the Horatian Ode and remember our Cornelius Müller! With friendly devoted greetings, Your Ferd. Lüders. Signed by Author(s).…
