First UK edition. ix, 213pp. The author writes in his preface to this book: "The Schachty case which was tried in Moscow from May to July 1928 and unfolded before the world the whole tragedy of the Problem of the Expert in the Service of the Soviet, the so called "Spetz" has prompted me to write the present book.As a former expert in the service of the soviet, I shall neither present a scientific treatise not give revelations or produce sensations." The Schachty, or Shakhty, case he refers to was the first important Soviet show trial since the case of the Socialist Revolutionary Party in 1922. Fifty-three engineers and managers from the North Caucasus town of Shakhty were arrested in 1928 after being accused of conspiring to sabotage the Soviet economy with the former owners of the coal mines. The trial was conducted on May 18, 1928, in House of Trade Unions, Moscow. Thirty-four of the accused received prison terms, while eleven were sentenced to death (with six being executed; the rest received commutations). The remainder were acquitted or received suspended sentences. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards and slight fading around the edges of the boards. The spine is more noticeably faded and is now a light brown colour and there is light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
