First edition. This work was published as part of the collection: "Documents rares ou inédits relatifs à l'Histoire de Paris". This copy is printed on vergé des Vosges paper, part of a limited run of 350 copies; with 16 out-of-text illustrations in the reproduction of the 1484 printed edition of the poem, attributed to Maistre Jehan Gerson (Jean Charlier de Gerson, the famous theologian and chancellor of the University of Paris). The Cemetery of the Holy Innocents (Cimetière des Saints-Innocents) was one of medieval Paris's most important burial grounds, and its famous mural showing Death leading figures from every social rank in a dance was one of the earliest and most influential depictions of the danse macabre motif in France. Abbé Valentin Dufour (18261896) was a Parisian priest, historian, and archaeologist. He served as deputy librarian of the Hôtel de Ville in 1866, then as librarian of the Chapter of Notre-Dame from 1867 onward. He also served as chaplain at the Mazas Prison starting in 1871. These positions allowed him privileged access to important archival collections notably the library of the Hôtel de Ville before it was burned down by the Communards, which allowed him to conduct in-depth historical research. In France, horse can be found in common butcher shops and was famously consumed in large amounts during the 1870 Siege of Paris, when it was included in haute cuisine menus.
