Ludecke, in the publisher's scarce dust jacket. (illustrator). First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, xiv, [2], 814pp, [2]. Brown cloth, title stamped in silver on spine and front cover. Swastica stamped in blind on cover. The first printing, with "Scribner's A" on the copyright page. Top edge dyed pink. In the publisher's scarce first state dust jacket, $3.75 on front flap, archival tissue repairs to rear hinge, a few closed tears, light sunning to spine, a very good example. I Knew Hitler by Kurt Lüdecke, his memoir published in 1937, provides one of the first intimate profiles of the early Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler himself. The New York Times characterized the book as "a historical document" and "indispensable" to people wishing to understand the rise of fascism in Germany. Historians have been split on the reliability of Ludecke's account, noting that it should be read with "extreme caution." Ludecke escaped to America in 1933, after briefly being sent to a concentration camp by Hitler. He returned to Germany after the war and died in 1960. This memoir was released in London the following year by Jerrolds Publishers, Limited.

In den WarenkorbFirst UK edition of this memoir of Hitler and the Third Reich by one of the few senior Nazi pre-war defectors. Ludecke (1890-1960) joined the Nazis in the early 1920s and worked to secure international support and funding for the organization, visiting Mussolini and Henry Ford. He was close to Hitler, who became suspicious of him. Ludecke fled the country immediately before the Night of the Long Knives - he had been imprisoned beforehand in Oranienburg Concentration Camp and was apparently on the list for execution. He arrived in America, where he first published this work in 1937. He was denied citizenship in 1938, arrested as an enemy alien by the authorities in 1942, and held prisoner for four years. Ludecke returned to Germany in the 1950s and died in Bavaria in 1960. "This is the story of the progressive disillusionment of a man who once revered Adolf Hitler as his hero, but sees him now as an ice-cold opportunist whose egomania has distorted him into a Messianic fraud" (jacket). Ludecke castigates Hitler but does not repent of his other comrades: the book is dedicated "In Memory of Captain Ernst Roehm and Gregor Strasser and Many Other Nazis Who Were Betrayed, Murdered, and Traduced in Their Graves". Ludecke's insider information is a crucial resource for the internal workings of the Nazi Party but treated with great caution by modern historians. Yet Roland V. Layton carried out a "systematic check of its contents against independent information" and concluded that "there is much that is true in it. Ludecke clearly moved in the highest circles of Nazidom. He was, the documents show, often where he said he was, doing the things he claims to have been doing in his book. At the same time, it can hardly be denied that much is exaggerated" (Layton, pp. 372-86), Roland V. Layton, "Kurt Ludecke and I Knew Hitler: An Evaluation", in Central European History, vol. 12, no. 4, 1979. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece and 7 other half-tone plates, 5 illustrations in text. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Very minor nicking at extremities; unclipped jacket with slight sunning and a few chips and short closed tears: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
