Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Foreword. Acknowledgement. Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Historical background. 3. Recruitment of labour in tea plantation. 4. Political participation of tea workers voting behaviour and its impact on the politics of Cachar. 7. Problems and prospects. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. The book is the result of intensive field study of the socio economic and political problems confronting the tea plantation labourers of Assam. The Morbid situation in Cachar plantations in South Assam where most of the workers still live a life of penury is also highlighted here. The immigrant labourers of Assam tea plantations being the victims of poverty ignorance illiteracy and excessive exploitation by the Zamindars and agricultural landlords left their ancestral places a century and half earlier and settled permanently in different tea estates have since then become part and parcel of Assam. These labourers gave blood shed tears and worked hard day in and day out to turn the barren tracts into green patches of lush tea bushes producing the black diamond. It is true that the tea estates which sprawled in the shimmering Sylvan Valleys have undoubtedly the economic profile of the State of Assam. But the socio economic problems of these workers continued to be deplorable. The fruit of the participatory democracy is still beyond their reach. The authors have critically analysed all these aspects in detail which may be helpful to the planners and decision making bodies at different levels. 238 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. Contents Preface. Acknowledgements. 1. Introduction. 2. Historical background. 3. Labour recruitment. 4. Socio economic profile of tea garden and ex tea garden labour community. 5. Management of tea industry and immigrant labour. 6. Impact of tea plantation on the economy of Cachar. 7. Political participation and voting behaviour of tea labour and its impact on politics of Cachar. 8. Problems and prospects. Bibliography. Appendices. Index. Tea is the green gold of Assam. The biggest producer of tea in India is Assam whose share ranges between 53 to 60% of India's total production. Assam alone produces approximately 29% of the world tea production. The tea industry of North East India including Assam employs nearly 7.4 lakh labourers and supports 9.47 lakh dependants. Tea industry is a labour oriented industry which requires a large number of workers right from the nursery to the final despatch of the produced tea for Sale in the market. In the beginning of 19 century the demand of labourers was acute. The rapid development of the tea industry and reluctance of local people to work in the plantations compelled the British planters to import labourers from outside the state of Assam. With the passage of time the tea garden labourer community has developed a culture which has been influenced by native culture of their new habitat. The present volume analyses the historical background of tea plantation including immigration of labourers. The socio economic profile of the tea garden and ex tea garden labourers of Assam highlighting the management of tea industry and its impact on politics economy and society of the state are the prime focus of the book. This book is a carefully compiled edition on the analytical and comprehensive study of tea industry workers in the country. 226 pp.
