Zustand: Good. - Small quarto [10 inches high by 7-3/4 inches wide], tan buckram, in a dust wrapper. There is some very light foxing to the spine & there is a tiny tear to the cloth on the front edge of the front cover. The dust jacket is darkened & lightly soiled with a light stain to the front panel. The head of the jacket spine is chipped & there is a tear & crease to the top edge of the rear panel. Half-title, title, [1] leaf & 50 pages plus colophon, printed on tan stock. There is offsetting to the pastedowns & endpapers. There is occasional very light foxing with a small white stain to the colophon & index. 50 black-and-white plates after paintings by Walt Kuhn with a brief commentary by Paul Bird on each. Good.…

They were shown for the first time in 1960 at the Cincinnati Museum. This was the second exhibition and the first in New York. With a typed price list signed by Maynard Walker, and laid-in hand-written note from Richard K. Lacarda, another art dealer commenting on who purchased what -- "Huntington Hartford bought the "Hand Balancer" #88, for about $35,000.Pres. Vintage catalog for an exhibition showcasing the works of artists Arthur B. Davies, Walt Kuhn, and Jules Pascin, held from March 22 to April 5, 1916, at Macbeth Gallery in New York. Founded by William Macbeth in 1892, Macbeth Gallery was one of the first galleries to specialize in American art. The gallery courted controversy in 1908 for its showcase of works by "the Eight," a group of eight artists (including Arthur B. Davies) who specialized in gritty, urban subject matter. One sheet measuring 9 x 14.5 inches, folded twice and measuring 4.5 x 7.25 inches folded. Very Good plus, with moderate toning overall.…

Perhaps best remembered for the important role he played in organizing the first Armory Show in New York City in 1913, the American artist Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) studied under Heinrich von Zugel, a member of the Barbizon School. He held his first exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in NYC in 1905, establishing himself as a serious artist as well as a cartoonist. Kuhn joined the faculty of the New York School of Art when it moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey in 1908, but left at the end of the school year, returning to New York where he married Vera Spier in 1909. He had his first solo exhibition in New York that same year. He took part in founding the Association of American Painters and Sculptors which, in 1913, was responsible for the first Armory Show which displayed both European and American modernist art. Kuhn collected German illustrated books of the early 20th century, especially those of the humorist, poet & artist Wilhelm Busch. …

Witty caricatures of summer life at Canoe Place, Little Shinnecock Bay, Long Island, with a recurrent theme of mosquitoes, including a pointillist picture of the mosquitoes surrounding the artist's dog and a small watercolor nocturne, "landscape of Canoe place, evening - sorry that the Darkness obscures mosquitoes." Walt Kuhn (1877-1949), American artist, was executive secretary of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, and was, with his friends, artist Arthur B. Davies and collector John Quinn, instrumental in organizing the 1913 Armory show. Kuhn frequently advised Quinn on his collection. The present letter shows a lighter side of their friendship. With an additional leaf of ink doodles in an unidentified hand on stationery headed Ogunquit, Maine (where Quinn stayed in the summer of 1920).
