Hardback. Zustand: Good. A poignant consideration of the material aspect of sound and how it fundamentally shapes our experience of the world, both in its presence and absence From the joyous communal connections fostered through shared auditory experience to the devastating impact of noise pollution in the deep sea, musician and author Damon Krukowski urges readers to reconsider the significance of sound and its role in both our personal and collective well-being. He looks despairingly at how the multipronged efforts of urban dwellers to mitigate city noise have led to increased isolation, loss of community, and a sense of physical detachment from one?s surroundings. He considers the consequences of the commodification of sound in the digital era. And he looks at what?s at stake in trying to preserve the world?s dwindling quiet places. Interspersed with personal reflections from years of working in the music business, this book investigates sound?s role in the environment, its value as a material, its relationship to labor, and how it affects our interactions with one another. Krukowski invites you to hear the world anew and renew your relationship with one of our most precious natural resources. So listen up.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. An NPR Best Book of the Year: "A pointedly passionate look at what's been lost in the digital era." --Los Angeles Times A longtime musician and former member of the indie band Galaxie 500 who has also taught at Harvard, Damon Krukowski has watched cultural life lurch from analog to digital. And as an artist who has weathered that transition, he has challenging, urgent questions for both creators and consumers about what we have thrown away in the process: Are our devices leaving us lost in our own headspace even as they pinpoint our location? Does the long reach of digital communication come at the sacrifice of our ability to gauge social distance? Does streaming media discourage us from listening closely? Are we hearing each other fully in this new environment? Rather than simply rejecting the digital disruption of cultural life, Krukowski uses the sound engineer's distinction of signal and noise to reexamine what we have lost as a technological culture, looking carefully at what was valuable in the analog realm so we can hold on to it. Taking a set of experiences from the production and consumption of music that have changed since the analog era--the disorientation of headphones, flattening of the voice, silence of media, loudness of mastering, and manipulation of time--as a basis for a broader exploration of contemporary culture, Krukowski gives us a brilliant meditation and guide to keeping our heads amid the digital flux. Think of it as plugging in without tuning out. "This is not a book about why vinyl sounds better; it's way more interesting than that . . [It] is full of things I didn't know, like why people yell into cellphones . . Ultimately, it's about how we consume sound as a society--which is, increasingly, on an individual basis." --NPR "If you're a devoted music fan who's dubious about both rosy nostalgia and futuristic utopianism, Damon Krukowski's The New Analog is for you." --The New York Times Book Review.…

Zustand: Fair. 2006, 120pp. Illustrated. Hardcover. In very good condition Growing up in Ohio in the 1970s, photographer Marc Joseph was first exposed to art, writing and music in the eccentric largeer book and record shops of downtown Cleveland. Most Saturday afternoons were spent combing through the stacks in anticipation of a major future purchase like his first, "London Calling" by The Clash or studying certain talismanic book covers like George Orwell's "Animal Farm" or Allen Ginsberg's "Howl". This was the beginning of Joseph's permanent fascination with books and records both as public artworks and as formative private experiences. New and Used is a collection of richly detailed color photographs of hardcovers, paperbacks, LPs, CDs and cassettes, either shelved, piled, boxed and stacked in their natural environments independent book and record shops or individually silhouetted like artifacts pinned into shadow boxes. Together with editor Damon Krukowski, the artist has assembled a collection of short fiction, prose, poems and personal essays by writers and musicians including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, novelists Jonathan Lethem and Lydia Davis, critic and curator Bob Nickas, poets Eileen Myles and Nick Tosches and others, all of whom respond to the New and Used of their own experience.…
