Bildteil., Vorwort Als die Sammlung von Vincent van Goghs Werken noch in der stattlichen Wohnung am Lange Voorhout im Haag ausgestellt war, hat die Kröller-Müller Stiftung schon einen von Frl. M. Laubheimer bearbeiteten Katalog herausgegeben, der für alle späteren Drucke zur Grundlage wurde. Darin wurden 253 Werke aufgeführt, unter denen einige Leihgaben, geordnet nach den damals bekannten Angaben und zwar nach den Perioden seiner zehnjährigen Tätigkeit. Zu jedem Werke hatte man eine Stelle aus den Briefen gesucht. Später erschien, ohne Jahr, unter dem Namen St Hubertusausgabe, eine neue, bebilderte Ausgabe, als die Sammlung als Reichsbesitz im Reichsmuseum Kröller-Müller in Otterlo ausgestellt wurde. Der alte Katalog von Frl. Laubheimer war für den Herausgeber W. H. Auping, den 1946 verstorbenen stellvertretenden Direktor des Museums die Grundlage für den neuen Druck; die Reihenfolge aber wurde durch die Aufstellung der Werke in den Sälen des Museums bestimmt. Das Prinzip der Zitate war aufrechterhalten, die Abbildungen waren besser, die biographischen Angaben mit einer kurzen Skizze versehen. eß Nun abermals ein Katalog erscheinen muss, ist ausser der allgemein bekannten Literatur besonders Gebrauch gemacht worden von dem sorgfältig ausgearbeiteten Katalog von W. Scherjon und Jos de Gruyter über die Periode Arles, St-Remy und Auvers-sur-Oise: Vincent van Gogh's Great Period(De Spieghel, Amsterdam, 1937, in englischer Sprache). Weiter ist mit Frucht die über alles Lob erhabene, belgische Studie von Dr Walther Vanbeselaere über Van Goghs holländische Periode benutzt worden (De Sikkel, Antwerpen, 1937) und auch die umfassende Studie von Dr M.E. Tralbaut über die Antwerpener Periode (Amsterdam, 1948), die auch im allgemeinen Sinne für Kenntnis über Van Gogh von Bedeutung ist. Schwedische Kunsthistoriker haben angefangen sich für Van Gogh zu interessieren und liefern unter der Leitung von Dr C. Nordenfalk, Stockholm, gründliche Studien. Dr Carlo Derkert macht Farbenanalysen der holländischen und französischen Periode. Ein junger, schweizerischer Kunsthistoriker Dr Mark Buchmann schrieb eine Dissertation über die Farbe bei Van Gogh. Die Monographien von Werner Weisbach (2 Bände; Basel, 1949 und 1951), Jean Leymarie (Paris, 1951) und Meyer Schapiro (Stuttgart, 1954; in deutscher Sprache) zähle ich zu den importantesten Beiträgen der letzten Jahre.0 So geht das Ausland vor auf dem Wege, aus der dramatisch-literarischen Lyrik über Van Gogh zu einer gründlicheren Erkenntnis seines wirklichen Künstlertums zu geraten. 0 Es scheint mir aber angebracht jetzt mal mit der Gewohnheit der Zitate zu brechen, oder vielmehr die Zitate zu beschränken auf die dokumentarischen Angaben, die sich direkt auf ein bestimmtes Gemälde oder auf eine bestimmte Zeichnung beziehen.
