Erstausgabe
Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed first printing thus. The format is approximately 7.25 x 9.5 inches. xiv, 338 pages. Illustrations. Appendix. Notes. Bibliography. Index. This is the only book that tells the full story of how the U.S. government, between 1942 and 1945, detained nearly half a million Nazi prisoners of war in 511 camps across the country. With a new introduction and illustrated with more than 70 rare photos, Krammer describes how, with no precedents upon which to form policy, America's handling of these foreign prisoners led to the hasty conversation of CCC camps, high school gyms, local fairgrounds, and race tracks to serve as holding areas. The Seattle Times calls Nazi Prisoners of War in America "the definitive history of one of the least known segments of America's involvement in World War II. Fascinating. A notable addition to the history of that war." Arnold Paul Krammer (15 August 1941 24 September 2018) was an American historian who specialized in German and U. S. history and was a professor at Texas A&M University in College Station. He was twice a Fulbright scholar: between 19921993, he studied at the University of Tübingen and, between 20022003, he studied at the University of Jena. He earned his BS, MS and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He came to Texas A&M in 1974 and retired in 2015. His specialties included the World War I and II, 20th Century Germany, and the Holocaust. He led study groups of Aggies to Germany, Italy, Normandy, and Poland. He was twice honored with the Texas A&M University Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. Derived from a Kirkus review: Many of the 375,000 Nazi POWs held in this country during World War II still look back on those "wonderful years." Arnold Krammer (History, Texas A & M), considers their "humane treatment" especially significant because it resulted in reciprocity for American prisoners in Germany--a contention supported at least by the Red Cross. Beginning with a painstaking account of prisoner processing, Krammer takes us on the POWs' voyage to America and right into the country-club-like camps: POWs ate well, played sports, attended classes, and worked at various jobs (alleviating the domestic labor shortage, but worrying such unions as the meat-packers who saw in them "a blow to organized civilian labor"). Unfortunately, the War Department did not segregate pro-Nazis (said to be 40%), and "since the obdurate Nazis. . . were the most vocal and demanding--and also "most closely represented the political views of the regime" holding the American prisoners--they got concessions from the War Department, Krammer maintains, and "solidified their hold" over the other prisoners. The results included Hitler salutes in some camps, kangaroo courts, and executions of anti-Nazi POWs. Krammer feels that America's reeducation program began too late (only in 1944)--a "tiny crusade" to teach political democracy to the soon-to-be-repatriated Germans, via newspapers, books, movies, and lectures (and so successfully, presumably, that several thousand POWs tried to enlist in the American army). A more thorough look at the POW experience than Stalag U.S.A., Judith Gansberg's 1977 study of the reeducation program in particular.
