Zustand: VERY GOOD. First printing. One of this Australian moral philosopher's most important works. Kovesi was born in Budapest, but fled to Austria at age 18, and emigrated with his parents to Australia in 1950. At Oxford University, he was influenced by lectures given by the philosopher of language, Professor J. L. Austin, and these later had an impact on this book, which starts by discussing the difference between evaluative terms like 'good' and descriptive terms like 'yellow'. A title in the Studies in Philosophical Psychology Series. vii,166 pp. Very good in very good dust jacket (scattered underlining and brackets throughout, mostly in pencil, previous owner's name, price-clipped dj).

Reprint. vii, 166pp. Julius Kovesi (1930-1989) was an Australian moral philosopher, probably best known as the author of 'Moral Notions'. Morality is often thought of as non-rational or sub-rational, and in this book he argues that the rationality of morality is built into the way we construct moral concepts. In showing this he also resolves the old Humean conundrum of the relation between 'facts' and 'values'. And he puts forward a method of reasoning that might make 'applied ethics' into a constructive discipline. The book is bound in the original red boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean. There is a name, place and date written in red ink and a brief inscription in black ink on the front free endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The bottom of the spine is lightly bumped.

In the diverse but related essays collected in Values and Evaluations, Julius Kovesi's central concerns are the nature of ideological thinking and the rational core of morality. «It is characteristic of ideological beliefs that their truth is upheld independent of the arguments for them», he contends. He examines ideological tendencies in the Marxist tradition, in attempts to demythologize Christianity, and in modern British ethical theory. In ethics, he continues the attack on the fact/value dichotomy he began in Moral Notions, a dichotomy he thinks has ideological sources. In theology, he argues that demythologizing is really a form of «remythologizing». A long study of Moses Hess's essay On the Essence of Money is used to illuminate the early thought of Marx. 223 Seiten, broschiert (American University Studies. Series V: Philosophy; Vol. 183/Peter Lang Verlag 2001). Statt EUR 36,95. Gewicht: 353 g - Softcover/Taschenbuch.
