The book presents for the first time, in a broad, genetic, and problem-oriented dimension, the diversity of Polish artistic graphics, manifesting itself during the formative period from 1897 to 1917. It outlines the fundamental stages of development of this aspiring discipline towards independence, defines emerging trends within its framework, introduces the artists contributing to these trends, and characterizes their pursuits and experiments. The subject of the research here largely includes graphic works that have been previously unexplored and unpublished, often engravings by creators overlooked in the historiography of Polish art. The book's narrative reconstructs the determination in the struggle for the nobility of graphics in a much broader context - the popularization of the aesthetic norms of "black and white," the principles of monochromatic representation, to which sketches and drawings were also subordinated. The promotion of drawings done in black pencil, ink, and charcoal, along with the advocacy for original graphics, was part of a campaign to transform the aesthetic consciousness of audiences, convincing them of the artistic merits of these more "intimate" and seemingly subordinate means of expression compared to painting. A fundamental element of the discourse is the context of original European graphics, primarily essential because pioneers of Polish workshop graphics initially sought models and inspiration there. At the same time, the book emphasizes the original contribution that this new discipline of Polish art, gradually freeing itself from slavish imitation, made in the course of transformations in European art. Zarysowuje zasadnicze etapy rozwoju tej aspirującej do samodzielności dyscypliny, definiuje wyłaniające się w jej ramach nurty, prezentuje współtworzących je artystów, charakteryzuje podejmowane przez nich poszukiwania i eksperymenty.
