Koopmans zeigt anhand konkreter Fälle und statistischer Daten auf, dass die aktuelle Flüchtlingspolitik die innere Sicherheit gefährdet, den Rechtspopulismus stärkt und Europa spaltet. Die sogenannte Flüchtlingskrise von 2015 wird als hausgemachte Krise der Asylpolitik entlarvt. Seine Forschungsergebnisse führen zu einem pragmatischen Vorschlag: Durch großzügige humanitäre Aufnahmen in Verbindung mit der Eindämmung irregulärer Einwanderung könnte Europa die Kontrolle zurückgewinnen. Koopmans warnt, dass das derzeitige System mehr Menschenleben fordert, als es rettet, und dass nur die Stärksten es nach Europa schaffen. Die Erstaufnahmeländer werden im Stich gelassen, und die Integration erweist sich als aufwendiger als gedacht.
