A large part of the book focuses on a type-by-type description of specific designs of ekranoplans developed in the Soviet Union and Russia in the course of half a century. Special emphasis is given to the activities of Rostislav Alekseyev, who has played an enormous role in the development of this new technology. Ekranoplans developed by several other major design bureaux, notably those led by Sukhoi, Bartini and Beriyev, are also considered. Economic and political transformations following the break-up of the Soviet Union led to the emergence of privately owned design bureaux and firms that are now pursuing the development of WIG craft in Russia, given the lack of interest on the part of the military and the state in this branch of transport technology. Yefim Gordon (born 1950 in Vilnius, Soviet Union) is a Lithuanian aircraft photographer and author who specializes in Soviet aircraft and Russian aviation. Gordon graduated in 1972 from the Polytechnic Institute Kaunas as an engineer/electronic technician. Since 1973 he lives in Moscow, where he collected photographs and books on the history of Soviet aviation. This collection became a large archive. Since the 1980s he is a professional aviation journalist and writer. He has authored and co-authored about 100 books on Soviet and Russian aviation in Russian, English, Polish and Czech, published articles in nearly 100 journals and photo reports. He also works as a photographer. The 2018 edition of Jane's All The World's Aircraft shows 50 of his photographs. Gordon is co-owner of the Moscow aviation publisher Polygon Press Ltd. His works are also distributed by Midland publishing (now Ian Allan Publishing), Hikoki Publications Japan and Crécy publishing ltd. As a co-author, he regularly collaborates with Dmitri and Sergey Komissarov. This interesting survey looks at Russian military aviation in the post-Soviet era. While difficulties with funding means that the large new aircraft programs of the Cold War era are likely to remain things of the past, military aviation in Russia is not standing still. Upgrades to existing programs and reorganization of current resources are two of the ways in which combat capability is being not just maintained but enhanced. Established in 1934, the Ilyushin design bureau is one of the best-known Soviet/Russian aircraft design companies. The Ilyushin OKB has developed aircraft for widely varying roles. The IL-2 armored attack aircraft brought Ilyushin well-earned fame; this aircraft fought with success during WWII. The OKB transitioned to transports from the twin-engined IL-12, developed as a 'DC-3 replacement', followed by many other aircraft, including the four-turboprop IL-18 airliner (1957), the four-turbofan long-half IL-62 (1961), the IL-76 military/civil freighter (1971) and the first Soviet wide-body airliner, the IL-86 of 1976. Ilyushin was established under the Soviet Union. Its operations began on 13 January 1933, by order of P. I. Baranov, People's Commissar of the Heavy Industry and the Head of the Main Department of Aviation Industry. Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin (30 March [O.S. 18 March] 1894 9 February 1977) was a Soviet aircraft designer who founded the Ilyushin aircraft design bureau. He designed the Il-2 Shturmovik, which made its maiden flight in 1939. It is the most produced warplane, and remains the second most-produced aircraft in history. With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Ilyushin was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army. When a request came for seven volunteers to serve in the fledgling Aviation Section, he was quick to volunteer. He worked at first as a mechanic and member of the ground crew. In the summer of 1917, he was qualified as a pilot. With the Russian Civil War, Ilyushin was drafted into the Red Army in May 1919, working as aviation technician. That autumn, a White movement Avro 504 biplane made a forced landing near Petrozavodsk. Ilyushin led a team which dismantled it, and sent it to Moscow where it was reverse-engineered into the U-1 trainer. In the autumn of 1921 Ilyushin entered the Institute of Engineers of the Red Air Fleet on 21 September 1921. In 1925 one of his designs was sent to a competition in Germany, where it took first prize for flight time. Ilyushin obtained a degree in engineering in 1926 and served until November 1931 as an aeroplanes section manager within the Soviet Air Force Scientific-Technical Committee, with involvement in the development of the design requirements for the new aeroplanes of Nikolai Polikarpov and Andrei Tupolev. He was also appointed Assistant Chief of the Air Force Research and Test Institute. In 1933 Ilyushin became chief of the TsKB at the V.R. Menzhinski Moscow plant which later grew into the Ilyushin OKB in 1935. His single-engined Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft, the single most-produced combat aircraft design in history, and the Ilyushin Il-4 twin-engined bomber were used extensively in World War II. After the war, Ilyushin concentrated primarily on commercial airliners, such as the Ilyushin Il-18 and Ilyushin Il-62, which saw extensive use with Aeroflot and with Soviet client states.
