Diets in nature differed significantly among three species of the gastropod genus Drupa (Muricidae: Thaidinae) on a windward, seaward reef platform at Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. Nereid and eunicid polychaetes and vermetid gastropods were the most important prey organisms. D. morum ate mainly Perinereis, Ceratonereis and eunicids; D. ricinus ate mainly Ceratonereis in protected sites and Dendropoma near the exposed outer reef edge. Size of Drupa was correlated with that of vermetid but not polychaete prey. The results are compared with data from studies of other predators on the same prey species at Enewetak, and with J. D. Taylor s data on the diets of Drupa species elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific region. 6 pp., 1 fig., 3 tabs, gr. 8.…

The extended proboscis of the toxoglossan gastropod Conus may exceed four times its contracted length and 1.5 times the shell length. The proboscis wall consists of cuboidal epidermis and circular, crossed helical and longitudinal muscle layers. Between the proboscis wall and its lumen, free longitudinal muscles and nerves course through haemocoel. A thick layer of connective tissue and columnar epithelium surround the proboscis lumen. In C. catus, muscle comprises about 70% of the volume of the proboscis (exclusive of its lumen) and haemocoel about 20%, in both moderately extended and contracted states. Differentiation along the length of the proboscis includes gradual replacement of muscle by connective tissue distally in the proboscis wall, and a subapical sphincter muscle that probably prevents back-slippage of the detached radular tooth prior to its use in feeding and aids injection of the tooth into the prey during capture. 7 pp., 2 figs, 1 tab., gr. 8.…

The osphradium is larger and more complex in Conus, a large and taxonomically difficult genus, than in other prosobranch gastropods. We examined intra- and interspecific variation in external anatomical characters of this major chemoreceptor organ, how these relate to ecological characteristics, and the potential of the osphradium to aid taxonomic differentiation, among 22 species of Conus. Six quantitative characters convey the main features of the Conus osphradium: its area, width-length ratio, curvature, orientation relative to the animal s anterior-posterior axis, density of sensory leaflets, and number of digitiform ridges on sensory leaflets. Species in 85% of pairwise comparisons differed significantly with respect to at least one variable. Multivariate discriminant function analysis successfully differentiated other species. Osphradium size relative to body size varied significantly with habitat type, and number of digitiform ridges varied with food type, but other characters were independent of ecological attributes and may potentially be useful in phylogenetic reconstruction. 15 pp., 6 figs, 4 tabs, gr. 8.…

High species diversity with high species: genus ratios, geographic distributions ranging from narrowly endemic to province-wide, and ecological specialization by species but broad ranges of resource use by higher taxa characterize marine molluscan assemblages of the vast tropical Indo-West Pacific region. Evidence from historical-biogeographic syntheses, paleoecology, larval ecology and dispersal ability, and cladistic hypotheses of phylogeny and distribution have recently advanced understanding of how lithospheric plate movements and their effects on earth topography, and global climatic change, especially since the Cretaceous-Tertiary transition, have profoundly affected modem biogeographic patterns. Integrated studies of recent and fossil members of the same taxon are suggested as a promising source of new insights. 8 pp., gr. 8.…
