First edition, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the first state dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm with just a little bumping at the spine tips, the cloth and gilt are bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked, price-clipped dustwrapper that is a touch darkened to the spine and folds and otherwise without loss or tears. An exceptional example, scarce thus. A counter-factual collection of essays by leading historians and authors covering important events in history and speculating on what might have happened if their outcomes had been different. Winston Churchill contributes "If Lee Had Not Won the Battle of Gettysburg". Both the book and the dustwrapper are in the primary state. Some copies in a reduce sized 'variant' binding of green cloth are known to have been bound with trimmed first edition sheets, and issued in a newly designed dustwrapper, which is identical to that of the 1932 re-issue. Paper Covers. Zustand: Very Good. 15 volumes. Orange paper covers with blue spines and lettering. Rubbing to the edges, a few markings, and little sunning to the covers. Some foxing to the edges and internally to 'When I Remember', 'Argument of Blood' and 'Why Britain Fights', occasional pencil markings, but most volumes internally clean. This complete set of Macmillan's War Pamphlets was published as part of the WW2 war effort in Britain to boost public morale, and contains writings by a number of prominent authors of the time.
