Pamphlet. 14 p.; 21.5 cm. (Aquinas Society of London. Aquinas paper ; 30) Carries Imprimatur. Imprint covered by label: Aquin Press. `Aristotle, once you have learnt his technique is, as has been said, the thinker who gives dazzling glimpses of the obvious. He saw the universe of being an an ordered whole, a kosmos [Greek characters], and he saw visible, material, physical reality as something lower than reason and as something directed by spirit. Aquinas took up all this into his thought, but to say that he used Aristotle as a basis, or that he `baptized' him, is to lose the full significance of his work. Rather, we might say that he stood Aristotle's system on its head. Whereas the philosopher was primarily interested in man and his universe, and was interested neither in the human soul nor in God, whom he reduced to a postulate, almost to a mere hypothesis, as the First Mover, for Aquinas the universe is something radiating from and centred upon God, who is the infinite richness of Being compared with whom all other beings are shadows. It is the cardinal difference between Aquinas and Scotus that for the former being is a hierarchy rising from brute matter to infinity, in which only God is necessarily existent, whereas for Scotus being is simply the contrary of non-entity, and existence is a necessary conditon [sic] for it.' (p. 8) Good in orig. blue wrapper, staples rusted.
