About The Book : A Dictionary of Kashmiri Proverbs and Sayings : Explained and Illustrated From the Rich and Interesting Folklore of the Valley; That moment when an author dots the last period to his manuscript, and then rises up from the study-chair to shake its many and bulky pages together is almost as exciting an occasion as when he takes a quire or so of foolscap and sits down to write the first line of it. Many and mingled feelings pervade his mind, and hope and fear vie with one another and alternately overcome one another, until at length the author finds some slight relief for his feelings and a kind of excuse for his book, by writing a preface, in which he states briefly the nature and character of the work. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-Kashmir as a field of Folk-lore literature is, perhaps, not surpassed in fertility by any other country in the world; and yet, while every year witnesses the publication of books on the subject from Bengal, Bombay, Madras, Panjab, and other parts. The author's primary object in collecting these tales was to obtain some knowledge of Kashmiri, which is a purely colloquial language; his secondary object was to ascertain something of the thoughts and ways of the people. Lately, he has been contributing some of these tales to the pages of an Indian journal; and now, prompted by the advice of those whose advice he especially value, he ventures to publish the whole collection in a book, and thus save them from the clutches of oblivion, to which they would otherwise have been consigned. Many of these tales are, probably, purely Kashmiri in origin, while others are undoubtedly variants of popular tales current in India and other parts, which have been adapted and modified to suit the language, style of thought, and social usages of the country. He would draw the attention of the Folk-lorist to the notes in connection with these different stories. They have been gathered and arranged with some care, in the hope that they may help the reader to turn up readily to variants of the tale, or of different incidents in the tale. The book is a collection of 40 fables and about 100 odd folktales collected by him during his stay in the Valley as a missionary. This book is a reprint of the 1887 edition. About the Author:-Rev. The region's name is found in Mahabharata and other Puranic texts, including the most famous Rajatarangini by Kalhana. Also, Sanskrit commentaries written by popular commentators Abhinavagupta, Vasudeva, Utpala, and others contributed immensely to the history of Kashmiri literature in the early medieval period. During the advent of Islamic rule, many Kashmiri writers, such as Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon, Nund Rishi, Rupa Bhavani, etc., wrote Sufi, mystical, romantic, and devotional prose, which became the source of rich Kashmiri literary tradition. This book is a collection of 64 different Kashmiri folk tales from different parts of Kashmir, which were composed during the pre-modern period. About the Author James Hinton Knowles (1856-1943) was a British missionary and was the principal of the Tyndale Biscoe School, Srinagar, from 1876 to 1880.
