Good edge-spotted orig. green cloth in torn illus.dj. Text clean. x, 262 p.: 4 color pl., 96 text-figs; 25.5 cm. (Illustrated books series) 11 chapters, each with extended short-title bibl. `After Darwin the old-fashioned natural theology was no longer tenable, as we have already seen. Coleridge, in his Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit, pointed to the dangers of bibliolatry; and his disciple F. D. Maurice similarly atttacked the systems, notions, and theories by which he believed theologians were becoming hidebound. His Kingdom of Christ of 1838 and Theological Essays of 1853 show his sympathy with a dynamical science, remote from fact-grubbing or system-building; and his style is not nearly as daunting as it is, and was, often made out to be. Newman's Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, of 1845, shows the place that the idea of development was occupying in men's minds in the decades before Darwin; this idea was taken up by J. R. Illingworth in the post-Darwinian series of essays, Lux Mundi, edited by Charles Gore [1889]. Essays and Reviews, of 1860, included Baden Powell on evidences and miracles and C. W. Goodwin on the Mosaic cosmogony.an epitaph for fundamentalist geology. An excursion into theology by two eminent scientists, P. G. Tait and Balfour Stewart's Unseen Universe, reminds us that not all eminent Victorian scientists were agnostics: indeed the agnostics of the X club were probably no more than a powerful minority. All these authors had been concerned more with disseminating what they thought to be a truly scientific attitude rather than with making known the latest discoveries of empirical science.'
