Cloth Boards. 1st edition. 8vo, pp. (x) 278, Index, b/w plates, decorated endpapers, original cloth boards, bottom edge rubbed, in d.j. edges rubbed and slightly frayed. John Knatchbull, naval captain and convict. He was said to have suffered from 'moral insanity' and was hanged in 1844.

1p., 12mo. On aged and worn grey paper, with a corner torn away, affecting a couple of lines of text. Franked on reverse: 'Ashford July eleven 1829 | The Right Honble | The Lord Mayor | &c &c &c | Mansion House | London | E Knatchbull'. Knatchbull's small seal, depicting a dog, is present entire in black wax. He writes that he would have had 'much pleasure' in meeting him at Rochester, but that his 'House will be full of Company on the 24th'.

First Edition. Near fine copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Slightest suggestion only of dust-dulling to the spine bands and panel edges. Slight lean to spine. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong. Provenance: From the library of Eric George Hatfield Moody with his bookplate to front pastedown.
