In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. Single leaf of manuscript on sheet music ledger from Oliver Ditson Co., Boston; single typescript leaf transcription. Five verses and the chorus from this Civil War classic. It omits verses three through six (of eight) from the original published version, but retains four verses that appear in other manuscript versions of the song, including the last chorus. It was written shortly after the singer and musician, Kittredge, found out that he was drafted to fight for the Union. "I wrote the words and music at the same time one evening, soon expecting to go down South to join the boys in blue, and I desired to have something to sing for them, as that had been my profession, giving concerts for a few years before the war. . The song was composed in 1863, and published by Ditson, Boston, in 1864." (Smith, Stories of Great National Songs, p. 155) Kittredge attempted to sell it to Oliver Ditson Co., Boston, for $15, but was turned down. It was later bought by them, as adapted by the Hutchinson Family Singers, with whom he'd been performing in the years prior. This music in this version with slight variations from the published version, and is drafted on Oliver Ditson Co. paper, maybe near the time of composition. Sold at Parke Bernet, Nov. 20-21, 1956 Single leaf of manuscript in black ink, signed by the author, accompanied by a typescript leaf of transcription; near fine Single leaf of manuscript on sheet music ledger from Oliver Ditson Co., Boston; single typescript leaf transcription.…
