There is a photograph of each, along with details of its construction and a foreword written by Patrick Moore. In addition to providing a fascinating study for its own sake, Small Astronomical Observatories offers a unique fund of ideas and practical details for anyone who wants to build an amateur or small professional observatory. ; Contents: A Practical Roll-off Roof Observatory in Michigan, USA / Dennis Allen -- Mount Tuffley Observatory in Gloucester, England / John Fletcher -- A Solar Observatory with a Slide Roof in Jordanstown, Northern Ireland / Bruce Hardie -- The Edenvale Observatory in Edenvale, South Africa / M. Contemporary calf, rebacked in period style, blind rules to boards, small gilt initials (I S) to centers of boards, raised bands to spine. Imagination necessarily played some part in this process of adaptation; and thus they are responsible not only for the enunciation of the rules of modern law, but also for legal and historical theories, the soundness of which was considered by many generations of lawyers and historians to be as incontestable as their statements of law" (Holdsworth). The first edition was published in 1579. Our edition includes the anonymous Retorna Brevium, a treatise on writs originally published in 1538. Loose., A very good example of this collection of maps, which are most often sold individually and are becoming increasingly rare and scarce. Emanuel Bowen (1694?1767) was a Welsh map engraver who served as Royal Mapmaker to both King George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. Bowen was highly regarded by his contemporar…ies for producing some of the largest, most detailed, and most accurate maps of his era. No binding. Zustand: Near fine. Fourth. THE MOST IMPORTANT MAP IN AMERICAN HISTORY. London: Jeffreys and Faden, 1755 (?1774). Fourth edition. Eight engraved sheets dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen (1378mm x 1946mm) with hand-color in outline. Presented in a contemporary tree-marbled calf wooden slip-case. Lightly…but evenly tanned. Some offsetting and pigment oxidation. The slip-case in disrepair. How often does a tool so fully meet its intended goal that it continues to be used for two centuries? The map of the eastern part of North America made by John Mitchell (1711-1768) is such a tool. Mitchell was a close friend of the second Earl of Halifax (to whom the map is dedicated), who as president of the Board of Trade 1748-1761 was able to furnish Mitchell with the most accurate and up-to-date surveys that had been made of the terrain. He consulted every map he could; he wrote to Cadwallader Colden that "there are none I believe but what I have consulted." This tremendous effort made all the difference, placing this map head-and-shoulders above others, even as cartographic knowledge advanced over the centuries. The enduring success of the map is all the more notable in view of its combativeness. Mitchell's map was not neutral or nonpartisan; it was full-throatedly pro-English and anti-French. Borders were freely extended and transposed to maximize British territory. It would go to some 21 states (impressions and editions) by 1781, and was translated into Dutch, French and Italian. It was the third edition that lay before John Jay during the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Paris (1783; now in the New-York Historical Society). The latest known use of the map is in the resolution of the 1980's disagreement between the U.S. and Canada over fisheries in Maine. Purchased at the Sotheby's London sale of Sir Brooke Charles Boothby, 15th Baronet (13 December 2023, lot 79) removed from Fonmon Castle, Glamorgan in South Wales. Born in 1949, Sir Brooke has done a great deal to revivify his family home on the Welsh coast. Perhaps the map was acquired by his forebear the 6th Baronet (1744-1824), who was in the circle of Jean-Jacques Rousseau; the unusually sensuous portrait of Sir Brooke by Joseph Wright of Derby at Tate Britain shows him reclining with a volume of Rousseau's. Stephenson, Richard W. "Table for identifying variant editions and impressions of John Mitchell's Map." pp. 109-113 in A la Carte, ed. Walter W. Ristow (Washington: Library of Congress, 1972). Howes M 678; Pritchard-Taliaferro 33; Stevens-Tree 54(e).

[London]: "Publish'd by the Author Febry 13th 1755 according to Act of Parliament, and Sold by And: Miller opposite Katherine Street in the Strand" (i.e., Andrew Millar). First edition, first impression. Eight engraved sheets, separately framed floating (26" x 18 1/2" each, framed at 31" x…23") with original hand-coloring in outline. With some very small edge-tears. A few sheets a little soiled and tanned at the edges. Two or three spots of foxing. Altogether a lovely set with original color. The latest known use of the map is in the resolution of the 1980's disagreement between the U.S. and Canada over fisheries in Maine. The first impression (per Stephenson) is distinguished by the following points: "Miller" and "Katherine" for "Millar" and "Katharine" in the imprint, and "Leicester" twice: above and below the third S of "Massachussets" (the lower corrected to "Worcester" in the third impression). Of this first impression, only two further examples are known: in the Library of Congress (G3300 1755 .M5, sectioned and mounted) and the British Library (K.Top.118.49.c.2; George III's copy, donated to the nation by George IV; joined and laid down on linen). Stephenson, Richard W. "Table for identifying variant editions and impressions of John Mitchell's Map." pp. 109-113 in A la Carte, ed. Walter W. Ristow (Washington: Library of Congress, 1972). Howes M 678; Pritchard-Taliaferro 33; Stevens-Tree 54 (1755(a) "first issue").

By outlining the differences between the previously undivided court, Kitchin, along with Coke, helped lay the foundations of modern legal theory. "In fact Kitchin was doing on a small scale what Coke was doing on a grand scale. Both were representatives of that school of literate Elizabethan lawyers.whose great and enduring work was the adaptation of medieval law and institutions to modern needs. Imagination necessarily played some part in this process of adaptation; and thus they are responsible not only for the enunciation of the rules of modern law, but also for legal and historical theories, the soundness of which was considered by many generations of lawyers and historians to be as incontestable as their statements of law." This copy belonged to Thomas Parker [1. London, 1598. Enlarged ed. Beale T374 (illustrator).

Engraved title-page with vignette, dedication leaf, 56 mostly double-page leaves of chronology, and 14 double-page and folding maps of the ancient and modern world engraved by Thomas Kitchin (some offsetting). The maps related to America are "A Map of the West Indies and Middle Continent of America" showing the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, with many forts and towns named. The British colony of Georgia extends to the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast and its boundary with Florida is noted as Limits Stipulated 1738, leaving the Spanish colony of Florida occupying only the peninsula. A line further south is noted as the Southern Bounds [Georgia] by Charter 1665. The southern portion of Florida is shown as a collection of large islands, named Bay del Spiritu Santo. Texas is named as the New Kingdom of Leon. "A Map of North America from the Latest Surveys and Maps" shows the continent during the transitional period leading up to the American Revolution. The map shows much of the region controlled by the British after the French and Indian War. Several of the colonial charters show their boundaries extending to an indeterminate western boundary. The charter and dates are noted along the colonial boundaries, which extend through Louisiana, a Spanish possession at the time this map was made. Another important boundary is New Mexico's eastern line, which travels north along the R. Mexicano (Sabine River) before turning northwest where it intersects with North Carolina's southern border. Another important map is that of the East-Indies showing southeast Asia depicting India at a time when Britain and the East India Company were solidifying control of the subcontinent. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
