Printed wraps, foolscap, iv, 51, (1)pp. A self-contained document removed from a larger volume with extraction residue to the spine, otherwise very good, tanned to the edges especially, with closed tear to the lower wrap. Portal was at this time Second Secretary at the Consulate General in Cairo, headed by Evelyn Baring. He was sent on a dangerous mission to mediate between King John of Abyssinia and the Italian Government following the killing of Italian troops at Dogali in 1887. This document, compiling 74 pieces of correspondence and reports dated 8 July 1887 to 23 Jan 1888, covers unfolding events relating to the justification, preparation, conduct and aftermath of his mission. Portal's own published account (My Mission to Abyssinia) followed in 1892.

One sheet, approximately 11 x 8" folded vertically into four pages, heavily spotted and toned, lower corners with some paper loss (and text loss), matted showing inner pages only, and framed to 14 x 14" with typed explanation matted below. In part: ".I hope the consulate are satisfied with the progress of the work considerably more attention has been paid to the following ____ Villages their inhabitants position and descriptions and the water supply of the country in all its branches." Not examined out of frame, but a photocopy of the first page is affixed to back of frame; letter is dated 4th May 1877 and addressed to a Mr. Dison. The wooden frame is coming apart at corners and needs to be replaced. Because of condition, SWAF.

Original large hand-coloured engraved folding map (167.5 x 94.5 cm. overall), dissected into 30 sections and mounted onto linen, on a scale of 3/8 inch to 1 mile, folding between marbled-paper covers into publisher's original green cloth slip-case with green title-label. Base topography printed in brown, hydrological features printed in green and blue. Margins enhanced with topographical sections showing the Mountains of Judaea, Hills of Samaria, Lower and Upper Galilee, Plain of Sharon, Mount Carmel, Plain of Philistia, etc. etc. Some light toning along folds, generally very clean and well-preserved in the original slipcase. An excellent example of this "Special Edition" of the "reduced" edition of Conder & Kitchener's Map of Western Palestine, issued in 1882, the year following the issuance of the first edition of the map. The original map created by Conder & Kitchener, consists of 26 sheets and is ordinarily found bound in atlas format. The present example of the map is heavily revised to illustrate the drainage of the Mountain Ranges in the eastern part of the map, "according to 'An Introduction to the Survey of Western Palestine' by Trelawney Sanders." Sanders did several adaptations of this map, one of which included ancient geographical information. Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, was an Irish-born British Field Marshal and proconsul who won fame for his imperial campaigns and later played a central role in the early part of the First World War, although he died halfway through it. In 1874, at age 24, Kitchener was assigned by the Palestine Exploration Fund, to a mapping-survey of the Holy Land, replacing Charles Tyrwhitt-Drake, who had died of malaria. Kitchener, then an officer in the Royal Engineers, joined fellow Royal Engineer Claude R. Conder and between 1874 and 1877 they surveyed what is today Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, returning to England only briefly in 1875, after an attack by locals in the Galilee, at Safed. Conder and Kitchener's expedition became known as the Survey of Western Palestine, because it was largely confined to the area west of the Jordan River. The survey collected data on the topography and toponymy of the area, as well as local flora and fauna. The results of the survey were published in an eight-volume series, with Kitchener's contribution in the first three volumes (Conder and Kitchener 1881-1885).

The main contributors to this important survey were Conder and Kitchener. For his work Lieut. Conder received the thanks of the committee and the commendation of the Secretary of State for war. "It may fairly be claimed," wrote Sir Walter Besant, "That nothing has ever been done for the illustration and right understanding of the historical portions of the Old and New Testaments since the translation into the vulgar tongue which can be compare with this great work." Kitchener (later Field Marshal) joined the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1874, beginning his involvement with the East which was to last almost for the remainder of his life. "These 'Memoirs' were drawn up from notes in the field by Lieutenants Conder and Kitchener. They are divided into 'Sheets' corresponding with the divisions of the Great Map of Western Palestine, in twenty-six sheets, on the scale of one inch a mile. The method pursued in the division and sub-division of the Memoirs was adopted in accordance with the recommendations of a sub-committee appointed for the purpose of considering the best mode of presenting the information in their hands."
