Kit Williams famous first offering, a treaure hunt book illustrated with his striking color paintings. It is credited with the inspiration of future "armchair treasure hunt" books and copies are highly collectible today. Wiiliams created and then buried somewhere in Britain a jeweled hare made of 24k gold. The precise location of the prize was told in "Masquerade" by means of clues both visual and verbal in text and illustrations. It sparked an international treasure hunt (in physically but mentally---solutions were sent to Williams by mail). The first "winner" was disqualified for having used inside knowledge from a former acquaintance of Williams'; the puzzle was finally solved by and the golden hare found by and awarded to two British teachers.
