Further education at Queen Victoria School and the Central Medical School (now the Fiji School of Medicine) opened the way for a long and distinguished career in Fiji's medical service, including an appointment to the Great Council of Chiefs. Immediately after Fiji's independence in 1970, Salato became the first Fijian to be elected as the mayor of Suva. Afterwards, he served as Fiji's Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
