Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. First Printing. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 565 pp. Illustrations. New York City theater critic Howard Kissel offers this biography of famed American theatrical producer David Merrick (1911-2000). No other producer, not even Ziegfeld or the Shuberts, equalled his percentage of hits or his demonic flair for publicity. He captured as much newsprint for his own persona as for his plays and hadmuch-publicized battles with such major stars as Streisand, Merman, Woody Allen, Jackie Gleason, Lean Horne, Carol Channing and others; he produced some of the greatest shows ever presented in cluding Gypsy, Irma La Douce, Hello, Dolly!, Catus Flower, 42nd Street, Look Back In Anger, etc.

Review copy. 8vo. pp. [viii], 565. Pictorial dust jacket, with titles to the front and spine. Original publisher's black cloth, lettered gilt on spine. Frontispiece and illustrations throughout the text in black and white. From the library of the playwright John Osborne (1929 - 1994) with a posthumous book label reading 'From The Library of the Hurst. The John Osborne Arvon Centre Shropshire.' The Hurst was his final residence - a large country house, now a cultural centre owned by the Arvon Foundation, from whom this book was obtained. Inscribed by Osborne at front: 'Along with: Diaghliev, Eisenstein & Walt Disney - D. M. one of the most astonishing men of the century. Well, he's the only one [who] has personally entered my own life.' Numerous notes in Osborne's hand, mainly on rear endpapers, presumably in preparation for writing his review. Also loosely inserted Osborne's rough notes written on flyers for the publication. Kissel makes references to Osborne in the text and Osborne has on a couple of occasions marked a passage in the margin. David Merrick (1911 2000) was one of the most successful producers that Broadway has ever seen, he was also a master at generating publicity for his plays. He produced Osborne's 'Look Back in Anger', The Entertainer', 'Luther' and 'Inadmissable Evidence' amongst others. ISBN: 1557831726. Very good plus dust jacket, slightly creased at head of spine. Endpapers, and last page, with extensive notations in blue ink. Other marginalia from John Osborne in the body of the text. Rubbing from paperclip at front endpaper. Head and tail of spine mildly bumped. Slightly dusty top edge. Some turned over corners throughout. Very good overall.
