Joseph Towers and other Gentlemen. In five volumes complete. Volume one: Aaron to Bathurst; volume two: Bathurst to Bull; volume three: Bulleyn to Coke; volume four: Baxter to Davies; volume five: Davis to Fastolff. Biographia Britannica was a multi-volume biographical compendium, "the most ambitious attempt in the latter half of the eighteenth century to document the lives of notable British men and women". The first edition, edited by William Oldys, appeared in 6 volumes (the sixth in two parts, the second sometimes catalogued as volume 7) between 1747 and 1766. Five volumes of an incomplete second edition, edited by Andrew Kippis with the assistance of Joseph Towers, appeared between 1778 and 1793, and cover names commencing Aa through to Fa; a sixth volume was prepared for publication, and may have been published, but now seems to be lost. Contributors included Thomas Broughton and John Campbell, compiler of Lives of the Admirals (1742). Andrew Kippis (1725 - 1795) was an English nonconformist clergyman and biographer. Joseph Towers (1737 - 1799) was an English Dissenter and biographer. In half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally sound but with wear to extremities and rubbing and marks to boards, one volume rebacked. Seven boards detached, two joints failed with boards held by hinges only, one joint cracked. Internally, text blocks firmly bound. Bright and generally clean but with occasional slight foxing and marks to pages and small institutional ink stamps to reverse of titles and an ink stamp 'Rebound 11 Jul 1957' to rear of volume three.
