"Few people have influenced the conservation of Africa's great herds of wild game as much as Bruce Kinloch. During his unique career, which included the posts of Chief Game Warden of Uganda, Tnazania and Malawi, and his creation of the Collece of African Wildlife Management on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, his advice was sought and valued as the innovative authority on wildlife management. In [this book], Bruce Kinloch tells a fascinating story of the constant struggle to preserve Africa's wildlife, especially its dwindling herds of elephants. Ivory poachers, devious middlemen, uncaring and bigoted officials all add to a game warden's worries, apart from the need to safeguard the crops and livelihood of the indigenous population. Bruce's encounters with rogue elephants, buffalo and poachers make thrilling reading and highlight the unsung work of the game wardens and their assistants who daily put their lives at risk. But it was not all work and Bruce's description of fishing for the giant Nile perch below the Murchison Falls will make any angler's mouth water. [This book] was first published in 1972 and since that time Africa's wildlife reserves have waxed and waned in response to the seismic changes which have swept Africa. This story is as relevant and fresh today as when it was first published." .

The author of this story is Senior Game Warden of Tanganyika; during his years in the Game Department he and his wife have reared all kinds of wild animals, but in a long succession of sick and orphaned refugees none had as disruptive an influence on their lives as the subject of this book: Pipa the mongoose. Pipa was small and pathetic and only token resistance was made to his adoption. In an amazingly short space of time, he turned into an affectionate, inquisitive, domineering autocrat who reacted with a fierce display of temper when his wishes were thwarted. For a long time Pipa ruled the Kinloch home, their domestic staff, the two dogs, the visitors and the tradesmen; sometimes his subjects united to call him an unmitigated pest, but when one day Pipa disappeared, everyone, including Amos, the cook, who had been his special victim, felt the house empty and sad and rejoiced when he was found. Eventually it became obvious that a suburban house could not remain Pipa's home forever, so the Kinlochs installed him in a game camp by the Grumeti River. There, undisconcerted by the move, he continued to assert his personality over the tough and independent game scouts. Bruce Kinloch was fortunate in having a camera to record not only Pipa's different moods but also incidents which, unsubstantiated, might have sounded like tall stories. The photographs suggest too why Major Kinloch chose to write his first book about a small mongoose rather than one of the larger, more glamorous animals he has hand-reared; for, in his opinion, Pipa 'has more character and intelligence in his hind feet than all the lions, leopards and elephants in Africa'. Illustrated with B/W photos.
