Sie nannten sich nach der Hauptstadt Jamaicas, da ihr Repertoire neben traditionellen amerikanischen Folksongs auch Calypsos und lateinamerikanische Stücke enthielt, auch Country- und Gospeleinflüsse sind vorhanden. Mit ihren unkomplizierten und harmonischen Interpretationen erreichten sie ein viel größeres Publikum als die reinen Folkkünstler und trugen damit wesentlich zur Ausbreitung des Folkrevivals der späten 1950er und frühen 1960er-Jahre bei. Diese Version eines alten amerikanischen Folksongs aus North Carolina erschien 1958 auf der ersten LP des kurz zuvor gegründeten Trios. Sie waren zwar nicht die ersten, die den Song als Platte veröffentlichten (erstmals wurde er 1930 durch das Old-Time-Duo Grayson and Whitter aufgenommen), aber ihre Aufnahme wurde zum Welthit und ebnete der Folkmusic den Weg in die Popcharts. Zustand: Very Good. A nice little collection of 15 black and white photos from an July 1985 folk concert with the Kingston Trio and an August 1985 Birchmere Club concert with folk singer Tom Chapin. The July concert features the Kingston Trio in one of its many incarnations after their initial fame in the 1950s-60s. After the original group broke up, one of its original members, Bob Shane, bought the rights to the group's name and continued performing with various other musicians over several decades. During the period of this event, Shane was joined by George Grove and Bobby Haworth. There are seven photos of the group and of Shane alone. There are three photos that feature Dick Cerri, the well-known D.C.folk music disc jockey and founder of the World Folk Music Association. There is also a photo of singers Doris Justis and Sean McGhee, a couple who sometimes performed together as Side by Side. One other photo does not identify its subjects. There are four photos (two duplicates) from Chapin's performance at the Birchmere. The pictures appear to have been taken professionally, with "Photograph by Jean Ward" stamped on the backs. Titled at top, with chord symbols, full musical notation in treble and bass clefs, structural performance markings (numbered sections, "IN," "OUT," chorus designations), and complete lyrics written in phonetic spelling for singing pronunciation, executed in dark pencil and pen with corrections in white-out, pencil, and erasures throughout. Fine condition. The Kingston Trio first recorded their arrangement of "Zombie Jamboree" (originally a Calypso song by Lord Invader) on a stereo concert album in 1958, followed by its appearance on their From The Hungry i album in 1959. The group achieved immediate commercial breakthrough in 1958 with "Tom Dooley," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, sold six million copies, and received the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording (1959). The single's extraordinary success catalyzed the folk revival that dominated American popular music through the early 1960s, establishing commercial viability for performers including Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan. This folk boom subsequently enabled the development of folk rock when groups like The Byrds and The Animals electrified traditional arrangements during the mid-1960s, but the genre's mainstream acceptance originated with The Kingston Trio. Titled at top, with chord symbols, full musical notation in treble and bass clefs, and complete lyrics written in phonetic spelling for singing pronunciation, in dark pencil with several neat revisions and corrections, and erasures throughout; on recto of a 12" x 16" sheet of yellow 12-staff manuscript paper. Measure numbers and structural notations appear at bottom. Guard's complete arrangement of the traditional folk ballad previously recorded by the Carter Family in 1929. John Hardy was an actual historical figure executed by hanging in West Virginia in 1894 for the murder of a man following a card game, though the killing apparently stemmed from a love triangle. The ballad's final verse references Hardy's religious conversion during his imprisonment, when authorities permitted him to undergo baptism in a river on the morning of his execution. The Kingston Trio achieved immediate commercial breakthrough in 1958 with "Tom Dooley," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, sold six million copies, received the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording (1959), and earned induction into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
