The intial 'C' of the Duke's name curls under the rest of the signature with a loop, and with end of flourish possibly trimmed in cutting the panel. (Comparison with other examples of the future king's signature as Duke of Clarence indicate that whatever loss there may be would be minimal.) Laid out in the customary fashion. Reads: 'Bushy. December twenty third 1827 / Mrs: Skelton / Sandridge Lodge / St: Alban's / Street'. Signature 'Clarence' at bottom left. In 1830 at age 64, William succeeded his elder brother George IV when the King died without legitimate issue; he is currently the oldest person ever to succeed the throne. He endeavoured to be seen as a hardworking and down-to-earth monarch which proved popular with the people after the extravagances of his elder brother, at least until the Reform crises. William had a rather colourful personal life prior to becoming King - he lived with Irish actress Dorothea Bland (better known by her stage name Mrs. Jordan) for twenty years and had ten illegitimate children, five sons and five daughters. The two parted ways in 1811 due to William's increasing debts, and he married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1818, with whom he appears to have had a happy and faithful marriage.…

'Mr Westmacott [the sculptor Richard Westmacott the younger?]' has called on him, and he has 'shown him the settlement all down my Wall - I told him that you had seen it but did not contemplate any immediate danger - he said that Mr Valpy [Henry Valpy (fl.1851-1885) of the architects Burrell & Valpy] was out of town'. Westmacott will write to Valpy, as he thinks there ought to be 'a conference with' Lakyn, who 'should be requested to make a report'. The 'suggestion' Newton has made 'as to the Iron ties will be indispensable - & furthermore that the East wall near door to me should be rebuilt - as it must have weakened the North East angle'. The 'wall of Mr Slades house' has fallen down 'with a tremendous crash - while they were digging for the underpinning' [according to the Survey of London, Stephen Slade lived at 8 Argyle Street from 1819 to 1864]. From what Newton sees 'as to a preparation for a Wall' he fears that the builders 'intend to come beyond the opening of my light'. Asks Lakyn to 'look in' if he 'should be coming this way'. Newton moved from 6 Argyle Street, where he had lived since 1820, in 1866.…

Written out ('By His Majesty's Command') in a secretarial hand, and addressed 'To The Husband for taking up all Goods consigned from Barbadoes and the Leeward Islands on Account of the Duties of Four Pounds and one Half Pounds per Centum'. Signed at end by three of the seven Lords Commissioners of the Treasury: 'N Vansittart | Lowther | G C H Somerset'. Summarised at foot of second page: 'A. Dickie Esqre. £76 . 18 . 9 Pensions to late Servants of Younger Princes Quarter ended 5th. April 1820'. Thirty-eight line document, directing payment to 'Andrew Dickie Esquire or to his Assigns the Sum of Seventy Six Pounds Eighteen Shillings and Nine Pence', to enable him to pay allowances 'to the late Servants of our Dearly Beloved Brother William Henry Duke of Clarence, our late Dearly Beloved Brother Edward Duke of Kent and our Dearly Beloved Brothers Ernest Duke of Cumberland, Frederick Augustus Duke of Sussex, and Frederick Adolphus Duke of Cambridge'. The two volumes folio, 20 pp, and folio, 18 pp. Both in the same neat hand and in uniform original bindings of green boards, with green cloth spines and white decoratively-cut paper labels on front covers, each carrying a description of the contents addressed to 'Königin Adelheid von Großbritannien'. The first account book (1844-1845) has part of the second leaf (pp.2-3) torn away; and the second (1847-1848) is lacking the fourth leaf (pp.9-10). The second has a summary (3 pp, folio, on bifolium) loosely inserted, addressed to 'Königliche Majestät', and dated 'Meiningen, den 25 Juni [June] 1848'. The second account book also has, tipped in to the front pastedown, a signed autograph reference from 'E. Ballinger | Housekeeper to her late Majesty Queen Adelaide', addressed from '40 Colehill Street, Eaton Square' and undated, for 'Hannah Feesey', who 'lived has [sic] Housemaid in the establishment of Her late Majesty Queen Adelaide upwards of 4 years': 'I found her a clean industrious good servant, and a respectable well conducted young woman'. Expenses include 'Bauwesen und Meublement im Fürstenhaus zu Liebenstein'. The two volumes contain a total of eleven pages of 'Pensionem', with the named recipients including Löwenstern, Wagner, Uttenhoven, Mauris, Panzerbieter, Zierlein. A scarce and unusual item: personal accounts for leading members of the Royal Family rarely if ever appear on the market.…

In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines, arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation, | Listen to my plaintive strain, | Tho' exalted be my station! | Day and night I sigh in pain; | Here I came a helpless stranger, | With no friend to take my part, | Braved the stormy ocean's danger, | From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' (i.e. King George III, whose wife is described as 'your Queen, a pious lady'), asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample | On decency's offended laws'. (A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey.) The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating, | Childless mother, widow'd wife! | My lost titles none repeating, | Let me lead a peaceful life. | When you think on my sad story, | Britons, drop a pitying tear! | And fair England's fame and glory | Shall to me be ever dear!' The seal, with a clear impression of a crown above the letters 'A R'., in a rectangle roughly 1 x 1.5 cm, adheres to the reverse of the second leaf of the bifolium, which also carries the name of the recipient, and has been repaired with tape along one edge of the recto. The letter is of 15 lines, and consists of directions as to where to place guests. For example 'Miss Murden Maid of honours room. her maid next to her. Miss Mitchell Bedroom up Stairs, her maid in the Closet within her room.'.…

Dimensions of print roughly 17.5 x 13.5 cm. On original grey paper windowpane mount (28 x 23 cm). Engraved label (2.5 x 11 cm) beneath the print, with a couple of remarque-style illustrations. The print itself is good, although a little aged and spotted; the margins and mount being rather more heavily affected. Attractive and unusual item, the image changing when held up to the light. Two soldiers are shown dwarfed by the high ceiling of the chapel, which is decked with brightly-coloured flags. When held to the light the chapel is filled with the mourning congregation. Scarce. There is no reference to this particular Spooner print on the net. The dioramic print was introduced to England in 1821 by the French photographer Joseph Daguerre. Spooner published at least thirty-seven of his 'Protean Views'.…

Blind stamp on titlepage of John Fowles, Lyme Regis. 31, (5)pp. A scathing satire on George IV in mock biblical style, supposedly translated from a 13th century manuscript, 'which by accident fell into the hands of the editor a few months ago'. The subject is Abomilech, King of the Philistines, a near Eastern people who lived in parts of modern-day Israel from the 12th to the 6th centuries BC. He is portrayed as an immoral despot, 'given to riotous living' and 'lusting after strange women'. 'The people hated Abomilech and instead of shouting they cursed him, and prayed that they might behold his face no more'. The preface advises, 'The story, probably, was composed for the purpose of recording the improper conduct of some king of the Author's own times. Late events, however, it was conceived, might render it interesting to the readers of the present day.' This copy belonged to the English writer John Fowles, 1926-2005, best-known for The Magus, 1965, and The French Lieutenant's Woman, 1969.…

Reads: 'I was acquainted, for some years, with Mr. Horatio Goodday, while he was residing as a pupil, with my friend Mr. Fincham, of Spring-Gardens, [i.e. the surgeon George Fincham] and had many opportunities of observing his excellent moral qualities and professional acquirements. Mr. Fincham has always expressed himself as highly pleased with the excellent conduct of his pupil.'.…

Having received the unnamed recipient's letter at Horndean that morning, he writes that there is no reason why he should not 'take to morrow Week, in place of to morrow, as I know it will be equally convenient to His Majesty'. The recipient's 'own Merits' are his 'Recommendation', and 'His Majesty is quite satisfied with all You have done, as well as the manner in which you have done it.' Knighton had a close relationship with the king: he was instrumental in clearing his enormous debts within three years (1822-1825), and was addressed by him in correspondence as 'M[y] D[ear] F[riend]'. Despite a recent book by Miles Macnair supporting Serre's claims, the case for her imposture is overwhelming, as her entry in the Oxford DNB demonstrates. See also the various reports of the matter (for example Ryves v. Duke of Wellington, Law Times, 31 October 1846). 23pp., foolscap 8vo. On six loose bifoliums of laid paper with 1833 Britannia watermark of Gilling & Alllford. Good, on lightly aged and worn paper. Folded into the customary packet, and docketed on reverse of last leaf 'Copy Letter to the King from the Princess Olive'. (Note that this is not how such a document would have been described had the recipient been a royal representative.) Clearly a draft, with a number of lacunae, and a few emendations in another hand in pencil. The document and its 'signature' do not appear to be in Serres' autograph: they do not resemble other examples consulted, for example the manuscript offered for sale at Sotheby's in London in July 2009. The few pencil annotations are in another hand, and although more like, are still not likely to be in her hand. Written in the year before Serres' death, and apparently unpublished. The first page is headed 'A letter to the Kings Most Excellent Majesty' and begins; 'Sire | The high opinion I wish to Cherish that your Majesty when truth claims your attention will do no wrong induces this public appeal to your justice for the cons[iderati]on and redress of my unprecedented wrongs which I have from Year to yr patiently & degradingly submitted to rather than lay open to the English Nation the true Cause of the desertion and neglect of my late Royal Parents Relatives'. The document ends with the petition (pp.21-23), headed: 'To the Kings Most Excellent Majesty The dutiful and humble petition of Olive Princess of Cumberland - London Feby 1833.' It begins: 'Sheweth | That your Petr altho she is the legitimate Daughter & Sole Heir of his late Royal Highness Henry Frederick, Duke off Cumberland by her Royal Highness Olive his first and lawful Wife is disposed of all her Birthrights except her rank & name of her late Royal Parents'. The petition claims that she 'lawfully proved in the prerogative Court in the month of June 1822' a 'Bequest of his late Majesty Geo[rg]e. the 3rd of £15,000'.…

William IV ceased to be styled the Duke of Clarence on his accession to the throne in 1830. For 'the family of Griffinhoofe, Saffron Walden', see Charles K. Probert's piece in Notes and Queries, 14 November 1874, which states that 'The first of the family who came to this country was a Mr. Griffinhoofe, who, as Court Apothecary, accompanied George I. from Hanover.' The family clearly continued their connection with royalty, as the author of this document W. J. Griffinhoofe is listed in 1804 as 'Apothecary' in 'The Establishment of the King's Stables', and he states in this document that he has attended the Duke during his attacks. 3pp, 4to. On bifolium. Begins: 'Medicine as pr. praescriptions, of course guided by the present existing symptoms by Doctor Halliday, [the Duke's personal physician Sir Andrew Halliday (1782-1839)] Opiates I have ever found rather to distress than assist, His Royal Highness in these attacks | His Royal Highness upon these occasions is immediately put upon a liquid diet, Chicken broth, Calfsfoot jelly, new milk whey, barley water hot with some powdered loaf sugar, occasionly [sic] green tea with much milk, and strong coffee, the stricture of the breath being usually very severe, The Duke is not able to make the reclining position but has recourse to sitting in an easy arm chair in his flannel dressing Gown with two blankets plac'd on the chair, the lower one wrapt'd [sic] round the legs, []'. He states that 'His Royal Highness's condescention is well known to everyone who has the supreme honor of any communication with him, but in the whole length of my attendance upon the Duke of Clarence his patient expressions of satisfaction is far beyond my power of expression'. He ends by noting that 'the first food of any substance taken by The Duke is toasted bread in either chicken broth or weak green tea with much new milk'. 'We in consideration of some circumstances humbly represented unto Us, are Graciously pleased to extend Our Grace and Mercy unto them and to Remit until them such part of their said sentences as remains yet to be undergone and performed', addressed to 'Our Trusty and Wellbeloved the Keeper of Norwich Castle and all others whom it may concern.' William IV, 1765-1837, was the third son of George III; he inherited the throne, aged 64, after his two older brothers died with no living legitimate children. With no expectation as a young man that he would become king, William served in the Royal Navy, and, following his return to England, lived with the Irish actress Dorothea Jordan with whom he had 10 children. He married Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1818 and was known to be faithful to her. They lived first in Hanover and later in London. Though Adelaide was pregnant at least four times the couple had no surviving children; their first daughter lived only a few hours, Adelaide suffered a miscarriage during her second pregnancy, their second daughter lived less than three months, and the fourth known pregnancy resulted in the stillbirth of twin boys. These tragic losses ultimately resulted in Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent, the only child of William's younger brother Edward, to be named heir presumptive. The first years of William's reign were difficult, and this document is representative of one of the most significant issues that he faced as King. Enclosure Acts, which placed ownership of previously common land into the hands of wealthy landlords, meant that most farmers did not own the land they worked and were forced to rely on a cash wage from their landlord - about 6 million acres of land was enclosed between 1770 and 1830. Horse-powered threshing machines that could perform the work of many men had been introduced years earlier and resulted in the need for fewer labourers and the lowering of wages. The harvests of 1828 and 1829 had been terrible, and farm labourers were wary of another bad winter, especially since under the tithe laws, the church was entitled to a tenth of a parish's harvest. A culmination of these issues, as well as the inadequacy of poor law support, saw growing unrest in southern and eastern England, and the first threshing machines were targeted in Kent in the summer of 1830. As the riots spread, more threshing machines were destroyed along with tithe barns and workhouses, which were often burnt. The land-owning class was seriously threatened by these actions and the government took decisive action with nearly 2000 protesters being brought to trial in 1830-1831. Like the four men pardoned in this document, most individuals were sentenced to local jail time, though 481 were sentenced to transportation to penal colonies and 252 were sentenced to death - though only 19 were actually executed. Politically, radicals like William Cobbett used the riots to lobby for parliamentary reform, and it was for his articles on the riots that he was ultimately charged with Seditious Libel, though he was acquitted, much to the government's embarrassment. A general election had been triggered by the death of George IV resulting in the election of a Whig government, led by Earl Grey. The Swing Riots were deeply influential on the Whigs, particularly in regards to their reform policies, and the Great Reform Act of 1832 and the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 were both directly in answer to the actions of those discontented farm labourers. The King's popularity ebbed and flowed during his reign. He was initially popular with his citizens, but when he tried to reinstate the Tory Duke of Wellington to office following the resignation of Grey and other Whig leaders in response to the King refusing to create enough sympathetic peers to push the Reform Bill through Parliament, the public turned against him. William ultimately did reinstate Grey's ministry and Reform was finally passed; in 1834 he was the last British monarch to choose a Prime Minister against the will of Parliament. Despite some controversial political moves, William's seven-year reign was marked by the passing of several important and progressive pieces of legislation in addition to the Reform Act. The Factory Act of 1833 outlawed child labour, and the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 emancipated enslaved people in the British colonies. The pardon offered here, to of four men, most likely rural Norfolk farm labourers, represents William's desire to find common ground between the warring factions of his government - the House of Commons and the House of Lords. He knew that the rioters needed to be tried in the eyes of the law and held to account for their actions, but also that those guilty of rioting were protesting a corrupt and outdated system that had to change. Though a somewhat unassuming document, this paper reflects the beginning of some of the most profound political and legislative developments for equality in the history of Great Britain.…

This is an 1830 William Heath political cartoon of King William IV and was published soon after his ascension. In the cartoon, King William IV is speaking to Sir Robert Peel and Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, who are both dressed as workmen. King William IV, dressed in an admiral's uniform (he was often depicted in naval uniform), gestures at a railing and says, 'Come I say, my hearties you must pull these rails down again. I'm not going to shut out my tenants so down with it let's no jaw about it.' The Duke of Wellington, who was Prime Minister at the time, and is illustrated holding a mallet, responds, 'Do you think his honor is serious Bob?'. Sir Robert Peel, the Home Secretary, who is kneeling and holding a trowel, responds, 'Why he looks so'. This exchange is referring to one of King William IV's first popular acts as king, the opening of a public passage between Waterloo Place and St. James Park in London. This cartoon is rather scarce. We were able to locate examples in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It was created by William Heath and published by Thomas McLean in July 1830.…
