Kilvert was an English clergyman, his diaries well reflecting rural life in Britain during the 1870s. During this period he was a vicar at Llanigon, St Harmon, and Bredwardine. With a photographic frontispiece to the first volume. With two typed letters addressed to the Editor of the Times Literary Supplement (David Leslie Murray) pasted to the rear endpapers of the third volume: one from William Plomer, and the other from Florence Broom-Giles, both concerning Kilvert's wife. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spines and top edges green. Each volume contains the bookplates of Alexander Malcolm Scott (1864-1956) and Arnold Muirhead (1900-1988) to front endpapers, with the addition of the bookplate of Ernest Guy to the second volume.
