"Until very recently when Ladakh was opened up for tourists, the whole of the Buddhist borderland between Tibet and India (with the exception of Nepal) was comparatively difficult to approach. The specific regions touched upon in the present study are, in any case, hardly hospitable places for casual visitors. The high altitude, the difficult means of transport, added to the rigours of the permit system in force, have ensured their relative isolation. However, determined and intrepid scholars have managed to wander up and down the valleys of the Western Himalaya and have published extremely valuable material on the region and this present work has relied on the published works of Cunningham, Francke, Tucci, Goetz, Snellgrove and Skorupski for guidance.
