Hay novelas que se anclan en un contexto histórico, social y cultural muy específico y, aun así, viajan bien a otras culturas; novelas que nos abren una ventana a mundos lejanos y desconocidos y que al mismo tiempo nos cuentan historias que nos interpelan, tal vez porque tratan temas universales que trascienden las fronteras culturales. Una de ellas es Frutos salvajes de la china Sheng Keyi. Xiaohan es la narradora de esta novela, una joven periodista de orígenes campesinos de la región sureña de Hunan que rememora la historia de su familia. Lo hace con cierta distancia irónica y con una buena dosis de humor negro, a pesar de que (o tal vez porque) muchos de los sucesos que narra son realmente dramáticos. Entramos en su familia a través del retrato de los más cercanos: un abuelo ludópata que le enseña caligrafía, un padre despótico y maltratador, una madre sumisa pero que la apoya en sus estudios, un hermano expresidiario, otro hermano intelectual que se involucra en los sucesos de Tiananmén, una hermana que pasa del maltrato paterno al marital. Este núcleo familiar va creciendo a lo largo de la novela a base de enlaces matrimoniales, aventuras amorosas, amistades y descendencia, lo que permite a la narradora mostrarnos, a través de historias entrelazadas de las distintas generaciones, la cara íntima de la China de los últimos sesenta años. Gracias a esta magnífica traducción del chino de Miguel Sala Montoro podemos escuchar la voz singular que Sheng Keyi crea con el personaje de Xiaohan, disfrutar la belleza de sus imágenes, la musicalidad y el ritmo narrativo que no decae en ningún momento, el humor negro, punzante, a veces escatológico de esta autora que, a pesar de su dureza, no renuncia a la ternura cuando mira a sus personajes. Frutos salvajes nos muestra la complejidad de un país que para la mayoría de nosotras resulta hermético y exótico. Después de leer esta novela, la distancia que nos separa se acorta tal vez un poquito.
