In this groundbreaking work, Joseph A. Kestner re- veals these paintings to be far more. As pic- torial ideograms, they were an integral part of a broad-based value system that reinforced pa- triarchal dominance by inculcating misogynis- tic and gynophobic attitudes among the broad public. Kestner's work will be welcomed not only by art historians and students of women's studies, but also by sociologists, historians, po- litical scientists, and all who seek a better un- derstanding of the role of art in society. Kestner examines the work of many major artists (Leighton, Burne-Jones, Poynter, Moore, Waterhouse, and Alma-Tadema) as well as that of heretofore neglected figures (Richmond, Draper, Dicksee, Hacker, Riviere, Rae, Solo- mon, Crane, and Tuke). He contends that these painters deployed classical legends to reinforce a legal, medical, educational, religious, and marital system that supported the prerogatives and policies of patriarchal power. Early in the book, Kestner uses the evi- dence of archaeology, sociology, journalism, politics, medicine, and law to reveal the func- tion of myth in classical-subject art. This evi- dence establishes the contexts for his evaluation of the work of various artists in subsequent chapters. Particularly powerful, he finds, are ideas that define men as heroic rescuers and females as helpless victims-often of despair or madness-concepts that permeated the codes of nineteenth-century society.
