En las fotografías, tomadas entre 1915 y 1970, Kertész capturó a lectores de toda condición en momentos intensamente personales -y sin embargo universales- en cualquier lugar imaginable: azoteas, parques públicos, calles abarrotadas. Tal vez en memoria de su difunto padre, que era librero, o porque entendía profundamente la naturaleza transformadora de la palabra impresa, Kertész empezó a fotografiar a personas absortas en la lectura tan pronto como comenzó a tomar fotos; un tema que siguió intrigándolo mucho más tarde, ya en París o en Nueva York, incluso en sus viajes por todo el mundo.
