Chicago: Charles H. Kerr & Company, 1916. Quarto. 705-768 pp. (9-1/2" x 6-3/4"; 24.1 x 17.1 cm). Original stapled pictorial wrappers. Moderate shelfwea…r and soiling. Property stamp of Socialist Party Headquarters to front cover. Covers detached. Internally clean. A good copy. $75. * Edited by Charles H. Kerr in Chicago, this issue contains a three-page article by Darrow, Straight Talk to the Rails; Extracts From Address Delivered at an Open Meeting of Railroad Men in Chicago, April 30th and a letter addressed to the editor by a German POW in England. By 1916, the publisher, Charles H. Kerr, had assumed full editorial direction, shifting the publication's stance from a dense, academic Marxist theoretical journal toward a highly visual, left-wing labor movement magazine. This issue was printed during the height of World War I, capturing the magazine's stark anti-war, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist views just before the U.S. government suppressed it under the Espionage Act in 1918.

In den WarenkorbFourth Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Slim octavo (20.5cm); original reddish-brown printed card wrappers, stapled; [48]pp. Gentle sunning to spine fold, some oxidation to staples; contents clean and complete; Near Fine. The fourth and largest edition of this influential Socialist songbook, originally published by Kerr in 1899 un…der the title Socialist Songs, and reissued in 1901 under the present title. "The first edition of this book was criticized in some quarters as being rather too heavey and sober," Kerr now explained, "and an effort has been made to remedy this defect by the addition of a few lighter songs. The compiler has tried, however, to exclude trashy music and songs without literary merit - his own excepted" (Cohen, Ronald. Work and Sing, p.24). Contains words and music to 62 songs. Uncommon in commerce. 84308.
