A YOUNG SHEPHERD BOY RIDING A WATER BUFFALO . *** THE ARTIST: LI Keran [1907-1989: The talented landscapist Li Keran, his real name was Li Yongshun, he also used the studio name: "Sanqi." . Li Keran was a Chinese educator, theorist, and painter. His contribution to contemporary Chinese landscape art was significant. In his work, he found a balance between modern techniques and traditional esthetics. . He study at the Hangzhou National Art College, he began to paint cowboys and water buffalo, endowing this traditional subject matter with new significance by his use of an innovative technique of splashed ink. Appreciation of his work, especially his figure paintings, grew, and in 1946 he accepted an invitation by Xu Beihong to join the faculty of the Beijing National Art College. . There the masters Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong, Lin Fengmian, became his mentors. Their influences with realistic sketching achieved a new naturalism in the traditional medium. Qi, fond of Li and his painting, applauded him as the most important painter in the post-Qianlong-Jiaqing period. . *** TITLE: "BUFFALO BOY" depicts a young boy riding a water buffalo, looking at and pointing to a bird one the crag on a tree branch. .
