First Edition. First impression. Octavo (19.5cm). Publisher's red cloth, decoratively titled in black on spine and front cover; top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut; 169pp; 14pp ads; with "96 or 97 [text] illustrations by Kenneth M. Skeaping." First edition statement and price of 3/6 on front cover. Text printed in blue on blue-tinted paper. Mild offsetting to free endpapers, else a very nice copy, tight and square with just a few inobtrusive spots of soil to covers; Very Good or better. Handsome copy of this rather elaborate late-Victorian oddity, a collection of humorous ghost stories, printed on blue paper and with lively decorations by the portraitist and illustrator Kenneth Mathiason Skeaping, intended as a parody of the then-current vogue for supernatural tales. A delightful and rather fragile book, seldom found in such nice condition.
