The photographs in this volume are chosen out of about 20,000 negatives taken in the post-nationalisation era of steam locomotion. They show each King Class engine with single chimney as built, and with double chimney as later modified. Each photograph is accompanied by text with personal footplate commentary by Kenneth Leech. The D/W is covered in a protective plastic. A good clean and tight copy.

Third, Cheaper Edition. frontispiece, 23 illustrations, xiv, 368, 8 pp Methuen catalogue; publisher's green cloth gilt, inner hinge cracked, tape marks on eps, a few marks to covers, upper spine edge slightly frayed. This book was the property of Kenneth H. Leech, the well known photographer and author of books on steam trains, who trained as a draughtsman and railway engineer. At age of 50 he took up climbing in Wales to rid his mind of an unsympathetic employer. During two outings to climb LLiwedd on Easter Saturday 1936 and 1937 the two men met. On the first encounter Leech drew a sketch of Young in profile and on the second occasion photographed him lying down smoking his pipe below a cairn-both are tipped into this copy of the book. The fep is inscribed in ink by Leech who gave the book to himself as a present in 1933; the additional information on Young is written below in pencil. Young (1876-1958) was wounded in WW1 (as a conscientious objector working in an ambulance unit) and although obliged to wear a false leg, pursued his climbing passion. A life-long friend of George Mallory, who was lost in the 1924 Everest expedition, Young's co-operation with Kurt Hahn led to the founding of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾".
