Dated 1853 on copyright and title page. 223 pages, followed by a section of unpaginated advertisements. Binding is decent. The front cover has come mostly detached. The lowest cord and bottom 1.5" of cloth are st…ill holding it on. No other loose pages or boards. Head and foot of the spine chipped. A crack in the cloth at the hinge, to the back of the spine at the head. Light rubbing to the corners. Pages are foxed and toned throughout. Heaviest foxing to endpapers and first few pages. No obvious marks or writing to be found. Tissue guard heavily foxed. Overall good condition, for a book from 1853. Please email with questions or to see any photos.

Gilt-stamped red morocco leather bookplate of American book…seller Ernest R. Gee mounted to front pastedown, with pencil signature (Joseph Cox) to upper front endpaper. Old, very faint tidemark to right edge of textblock, with some foxing to a few preliminary and terminal leaves, and to margins of pp.85-114; two tiny tears to crown, with a tiny nick to cloth at right edge of front cover; the gilt is bright and unrubbed, with the cloth uncharacteristically even and without soil; Very Good+, housed in a custom clamshell case. An uncommonly nice copy of this sporting narrative, documenting the author's hunting and fishing adventures in the wilds of Randolph County, Virginia (now eastern West Virginia). The illustrations were provided by David Hunter Strother, aka "Porte Crayon," well-known as a visual chronicler of Virginia's western margins and, later, as a Cvil War illustrator.
