Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Small quarto measuring 9.5" x 10". Brown leather with stamped decorations. Contains 27 black and white photographs each measuring around 3.75" x 4.75" with captions. Near fine album with rubbing and small tears on the board edges with fine photographs. A souvenir photo album made for Brigadier General Roy S. Kelley while stationed in Germany as the Engineer of the 7th Army and later the head of construction of the DCS/USAREUR (Defense Collaboration Services - US Army in Europe) headquarters in Heidelberg in January of 1969. The album was compiled by the "Dickhäuters," (German for pachyderm), the Army men who worked with Kelley on the construction of the headquarters. The photos show various construction sites commissioned during their time in Germany and overseen by Kelley. These include a school building for recruits, a pump station, mess hall, and a rifle range. The group also repaired railroads and updated the boiler room. Luxury rooms such as a sauna were also installed at the new headquarters. One photo of a group of uniformed men including Kelley is captioned, "Semmelberg tactical site, visit by USAREUR and 7th Army Engineer." Roy S. Kelley earned Bachelor's degrees in Science and Physics and Mechanical Engineering from West Kentucky University and Perdue University before attending West Point where he earned his third Bachelors in Military Engineering. After graduating in 1941 he participated in World War II. After the war he earned his Master's in Science in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Kelley was sent to Korea and later Japan where he worked his way up the ranks of Engineers before returning to the U.S. and becoming the Director of Personnel for the Corps of Engineers. During this time he also oversaw the construction of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Following this he was sent to Germany for the construction of the DCS/USAREUR HQ where he became a Brigadier General. His final assignment was planning the Alaskan Pipeline before retiring in 1971. An interesting look at military construction and one of the final projects of an accomplished Army Engineer.

This exhibition is a response to the enormous impact and enduring cultural significance of his work, following his death in spring 2009. Highlighting Ballard''s great passion for the surreal and his engagement with the artists of his own generation, Crash includes examples of his specific inspirations as well as works by contemporary artists who have, in turn, been inspired by his vision." -- publisher''s statement. Very Good / Fine. Light bumping of corners, otherwise Fine.
