Original edition; text in French and Dutch. - David van der Kellen III (1827-1895), painter, etcher and lithographer, was director of the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam from 1876 until 1895. This work on the antiquities of Holland is, as noted in the preface, his 'paper child' and the first of its kind. Hiler p.492; Lipperheide Gb 63.

'S Gravenhage, Martinus Nijhoff, 1861, in-4°, 35 x 26,5 cm, (12) nn pp + 48 pp + 100 lithographed plates printed on tipped on chinese paper (sur chine appliqué), contemporary full cloth, gilt title on front cover. Some slight foxing, a bit stronger on the very last pages, but a fine copy. The author became director of the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam in 1876. He made the lithographs to illustrate this work himself. (Hilaire Hiler pp. 492). Bilingual edition (Dutch-French).
A soldier, or musketeer sits on a rock, adjusting a bendage on his leg. His sword rests beside him on the ground. A dead man is to be seen a bit further on the right background. Signs of a battle in the far brackground and on the left, over the hill. Etching on paper with small margins; plate mark: 147 x 111 mm, total: 165 x 133 mm; some damages on the right margin, not affecting the plate.
