Series: The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 158, October 1969. 8vo. 261-268 pp. 8 figs., 5 plates. Self-wraps. Fine. ABSTRACT: In spectra of normal M giants, absorption bands of A1O occur with an intensity that is well correlated with the spectral type as defined by the TiO bands. In Mira variables, however, the AlO band can vary greatly from cycle to cycle and can be abnormally strong or weak for the spectral type. This behavior is not shared by other molecules, such as ScO and VO, which vary predictably with spectral type. / In some Mira variables the AlO bands haye been observed to go over into emission. This record in Mira in 1924 and 1964, R Scr in 1960. R Psc in 1966, R Crv and R Casin 1967, and RT Lib in 1968. / From a survey of all spectrograms of Mira itself available at Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories in 1967, we find that the AIO bands tend to be strong in absorption during "strong line" cycles and tend to be weak or reversed in "weak line" cycles . . . In the absorption spectra of long-period variable stars, there are seemingly arbitrary variations superposed on predictable temperature and pressure effects. One of the most noticeable of these spectral variations is the occurrence of "weak line" cycles, described in detail by Merrill, Deutsch, and Keenan (1962, hereinafter referred to as MDK). Another is the behavior of the blue bands of the AlO molecule. The characteristic with which we are concerned in this paper is the great variation of the AlO bands from cycle to cycle in certain Mira variables. / . . . The Mount Wilson-Palomar plate files contain a great many spectrograms of long period variable stars, due to the interest shown in these stars over the last 50 years by members of the staff, especially A. H. Joy and P. W. Merrill. To this wealth of material has been added a series of coude plates taken over several years by P. C. Keenan and A. J. Deutsch. During the last two years the authors have undertaken a concentrated observational program consisting of a survey at 80-85 A mm by one of us (R, F. G.), using the 60 inch telescope on Mount Wilson and the Perkins 72-inch telescope in Flagstaff, and a 20 . . . …

Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 2010 | 3rd ed. 2011. Fully revised and updated, Flow Cytometry Protocols highlights the expanding contribution of flow cytometry to basic biological research and diagnostic medicine. The text presents cutting-edge topics, such as polychromatic, quantitative, and high throughput flow cytometry, and more. With rapid improvements in instrumentation, lasers, fluorophores, and data analysis software, flow cytometry is riding the crest of unprecedented, innovative advances. This thoroughly revised and up-to-date third edition of Flow Cytometry Protocols highlights the expanding contribution of flow cytometry to basic biological research and diagnostic medicine. Written by leading experts in the field, the book presents cutting-edge topics such as polychromatic, quantitative, and high throughput flow cytometry, novel multiparametric data analysis which breaks the dimensionality barrier, standard practice and safety measures for aerosol-generating cell sorting, conventional and imaging flow cytometry as well as minimalist imaging cytometry. As a volume in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters contain brief introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and extensive notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and comprehensive, Flow Cytometry Protocols, Third Edition presents established as well as new flow cytometric methodologies in order to introduce beginning users to basic applications while opening new avenues of innovation for seasoned users. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The idea of this colloquium was first put forward by Prof. P. Keenan when he visited the Centre de Donnees Stellaires, in September 1982. Dr. A. Florsch, Director of the Strasbourg Observatory, kindly accepted to field it at Strasbourg. The scientific organization of the colloquium was in charge of a Committee chaired by Prof. P.C. Keenan and composed by M. Feast, A. Florsch, B. Gustafsson, D. Harmer, M. Jaschek (secretary), R. McClure, A. Maeder, W. Straizys and T. Tsuji. The members of the Committee helped to translate the idea into a very successful meeting. It should be added that this colloquium was the first meeting devoted to late-type peculiar stars. The program was organized by sessions devoted to the following topics : taxonomy, photometric properties, distribution and space motions, chemical com position, model atmosphere, binary systems and evolutionary tracks. Each session started with a review paper, followed by contributed papers presented as posters. The different sessions were chaired by W. Bidelman, R. Cayrel, Ch. Cowley, A. Heck, H.R. Johnson, J.P. Kaufmann and T. Tsuji, who did an excellent job. The President of the 'Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg', Prof. H. Duranton, welcomed the participants to the University where the sessions were held; Dr. A. Florsch welcomed the participation on be.balf of the French astrono mical community and Prof. P. Keenan spoke on behalf on the Scientific Organizing Committee.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The general discussions of the roles of photometric and spectroscopic classification at Cordoba in 1971 (lAU Symposium No. 50), and of the calibration of classification indices at Geneva in 1972 (IAU Symposium No. 54), revealed clearly the steadily in creasing importance of abundance parameters. The multipliCity of these, however, raised so many new problems that it was logical that the 1975 meeting at Lausanne should be concerned with ways in which differences in abundance affect both spectral types and photometric indices. Commissions 29 and 36 joined with Commission 45 in sponsoring this Symposium. Since the date of the meeting came shortly after the formal retirement of Professor William W. Morgan from the University of Chicago, it was quickly agreed that this meeting should be dedicated to him in recognition of his unique contributions to spectral classification. In the opening paper of the Symposium Dr. Bengt Stromgren has summarized these. To his remarks we should add only that it was about 1940 that Morgan first distinguished the group of G- and K-type stars with weak CN bands and metallic lines - stars which have since been recognized as having the abundance of all metals relative to hydrogen much lower than in stars of the solar population. Spectra of two of these, HD 81192 (Boss 2527) and 8 Lep, were later shown as examples of the group in the Yerkes Atlas of 1943.…
