His father, having emigrated from Skibbereen, County Cork, was a lighthouse keeper on Robben Island. Joining the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Denis Eugene went to Ireland for his novitiate before being ordained at Rome in1939. Retuning to South Africa he took up a curacy in Durban, where he would later become archbishop. He was an active participant in the Second Vatican Council and an outspoken opponent of Apartheid.* Not noted in the National Library of Ireland catalogue.
