In den WarenkorbFine Binding. Zustand: Fine. None (illustrator). A very finely bound copy of this famous poem by the Persian philosopher and poet Omar Khayyam. An English language edition translated by the noted Edward Fitzgerald. 'The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam' was the title that Edward Fitzgerald gave to his 1859 translation of the Persian quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam. Fitzgerald's was the first English translation. However, Fitzgerald's translations are fairly loose, he referred to his work on them as 'transmogrification'. Some consider that his translation of 'Rubaiyat' could be considered as Fitzgerald's own original poetry that are simply loosely based on Khayyam's quatrains. An extremely bright copy of this work, in a fine crushed morocco binding by Bickers and Son. Their binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. With fascinating provenance. This copy contains anecdotes regarding a first printing of this title. To the verso of front endpaper there is an article from 'The Bookseller' tipped in dated 1910. It explains the circumstance of Mr W J Wintle, managing director of Messrs John Ouseley Ltd. He discovered a rare first printing of Fitzgerald's 'Omar Khayyam' in the original covers. He paid threepence and then sold it at Sotheby's for £49. Below this there is a list of copies for sale of this work at Maggs and Quaritch. To the recto of front free end-paper is the receipt addressed to Wintle for this item selling at Sotheby's on July 27 1910. In Wintle's own hand he recounts the tale mentioned in 'The Bookseller'. It is possible that this later edition belonged to Wintle. A finely bound copy of this notable poem. In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally, excellent with just some minor fading to the spine which is common in this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Ephemera pasted to the front endpapers. Pages are extremely bright and clean. Fine. book.
