Without the large folding ''Guide to the Thesaurus'' wall chart. Blue silk ribbon per vol. First edition, second impression of this monumental achievement in lexicography, conceived and compiled by the English Language Department of the University of Glasgow, based on the Oxford English Dictionary, and 44 years in the making. The Historical Thesaurus made it possible for the first time to trace the evolution of not just a word (as in the OED) but of a meaning or concept. A ''firework display'' whose ''mere existence is a blessing'' (Islon 243, 260), the Historical Thesaurus ''presents meanings in chronological order, noting when terms first appeared, often when they disappeared, or whether they were one-shots, lovely doomed coinages such as "moonling". This makes it an unprecedented resource for, say, the historical novelist who wants to avoid anachronistic dialogue (a Jacobean calling someone a "half-wit"); but it also has more general and rich application, as the reader can trace the evolution of concepts and attitudes over centuries''; while with the OED ''one wanders through the language on foot; with the HTOED it is as though one is in a hot-air balloon taking aerial photographs: one instantly spies topographical features and interrelationships that were not previously perceptible'' (Poole). ''To probe the Historical Thesaurus is therefore often to engage in wide-ranging detail with the changing patterns of thought, of intellectual history, of social and cultural conceptualization, or of material culture'' (Mugglestone 140). Scarce. R. F. Ilson, 2011, ''On the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary'', International Journal of Lexicography, 24.2, 241-260. L. C.
