FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, a few spots to page-heads at rear, pp. 484, 8vo, original black cloth, backstrip lettered in blind against a red ground, some faint damp-mottling to cloth, faint partial browning to free endpapers and a few spots thereupon, gift inscription to flyleaf, the dustjacket with a wood-engraved design (somewhat in the manner of Eric Ravilious), a little nicked and chipped with a waterstain around the backstrip panel, good. The first of the author's works to appear in English, the novel concerns a 'bibliographical student before whom a brilliant future had been opening out' before coming under suspicion for the theft of precious manuscripts (dustjacket blurb). The translator's name is striking (as a 'sudden blow', perhaps?).
