First Edition. New York: Published by the Editor, 1849. Scarce Translation of a Standard Nineteenth-Century German Work on Civil Law Mackeldey, Ferdinand [1784-1834]. Kaufmann, Philip Ignatius, Editor. Compendium of Modern Civil Law. New York: Published by the Editor, and Sold by the Principal Law Booksellers of America and Great Britain, 1849. xxxix, 400 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"; 23 x 14 cm). Contemporary sheep, blind fillets to boards, raised bands, blind fillets, red and black lettering pieces and, at head, small hand-written label to spine. A few scuffs and minor gouges to boards, front board beginning to separate but secured by cords, rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, spine gatored and darkened, rear joint cracked, hinges starting. Light toning to interior, negligible spotting in places. A good copy of a scarce title. $500. * Second, final and best American edition, "With Numerous Additions." This is a translation, with notes, of the twelfth edition of a standard German work, which was first published in 1813 with the title Lehrbuch der Institutionen des Heutigen Romischen Privatrechts. Well-received in the United States, Kaufmann's translation was on the Harvard Law school reading list, and those of other leading law schools. The first American edition was published in 1845. It was intended to be a two-volume work, but its second volume was never published. Instead, the first edition was superseded by the second edition. Both editions are scarce. OCLC locates 12 copies of the second, 8 in law libraries (Harvard, Jenkins Law Library, Nevada Supreme Court, New York Supreme Court, St. Louis University, Tulane, University of Georgia, University of Victoria).
