This edition reproduced from that of the first (1856) edition of 'Piazza Tales'. Printed in the Walbaum type on Van Gelder paper with the pictures hand-coloured through stencils at the Curwen Press. Bookplate. Orig. dark salmon cloth with beveled edges, spine a hint faded. Near fine.

Original silver lettered blue buckram cloth with pictorial device on upper board (spine and edges of boards a little discoloured - otherwise bright VG). Pp. [iv] + 332 + [4] editorial notes + [4] blank, illus with McKnight Kauffer's title-page vignette and 8 full page plates hand-coloured by the pouchoir process 2 only with tissue-guards (endpapers lightly tanned; armorial bookplate of Ashfield on front paste-down; no inscriptions).

Provenance: From the library of Orwell scholar and former UCL deputy librarian Ian Angus, with his neat pencilled ownership to the front free endpaper. Angus was the co-editor of Orwell's Collected Journalism, Essays and Letters published in 1968 and also later contributed to editing the enormous 20-volume edition of Orwell's Complete Works published 1997-8. A very good copy, internally clean, boards unevenly toned and slightly spotted, some cracking to spine.
