Signed by Lawrence Block on the title page. The book is tight with solid hinges and binding, good tips, and clean unmarred boards. The textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. The dust jacket is unclipped ($25.00) and with diagonal creases to flaps. Protected in a new Brodart Mylar cover. 160 pages. 5¾ x 8¾" tall First published as a paperback original in 1969. The SPECIALISTS are five ex-soldiers, all trained in jungle warfare, each with a deadly specialty. As civilians, they lead inconspicuous lives, until the colonel sends for them. Then their job is to find and eliminate the worst kind of criminal, those who hurt the innocent, those the law cannot touch. Sometimes it's easy. This time, however, they're going up against a man who has his own team of specialists. Albert Platt is a rotten man. Bred in the rough parts of Brooklyn, he made his name as a killer and has built a fortune from gambling, loan sharking, and the other pastimes of a standard thug. His latest gambit? Buying banks, robbing them and collecting the insurance. He's a hard man, and no one ever stood in his way until he brushed up against Eddie Manso. E. McKnight Kauffer (illustrator). Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. Sixth printing [stated]. xii, 297, [5] pages. The dust jacket is in a plastic sleeve and is worn, torn, soiled and chipped. Edges soiled. James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1901 - May 22, 1967) was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. An early innovator of jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He moved to New York City as a young man, where he made his career. He studied at Columbia University. He gained notice from New York publishers, first in The Crisis magazine and then from book publishers, becoming known in the Harlem creative community. His first poetry collection, The Weary Blues, was published in 1926. Hughes wrote plays and published short story collections, novels, and several nonfiction works. From 1942 to 1962, as the civil rights movement gained traction, Hughes wrote an in-depth weekly opinion column in a leading black newspaper, The Chicago Defender. Langston Hughes electrified readers and launched a renaissance in Black writing in America-the poems in this collection were chosen by Hughes himself shortly before his death and represent stunning work from his entire career. The poems Hughes wrote celebrated the experience of invisible men and women: of slaves who "rushed the boots of Washington"; of musicians on Lenox Avenue; of the poor and the lovesick; of losers in "the raffle of night." They conveyed that experience in a voice that blended the spoken with the sung, that turned poetic lines into the phrases of jazz and blues, and that ripped through the curtain separating high from popular culture. They spanned the range from the lyric to the polemic, ringing out "wonder and pain and terror-and the marrow of the bone of life." The collection includes "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," "The Weary Blues," "Still Here," "Song for a Dark Girl," "Montage of a Dream Deferred," and "Refugee in America." It gives us a poet of extraordinary range, directness, and stylistic virtuosity. Edward McKnight Kauffer (14 December 1890 - 22 October 1954) was an American artist and graphic designer who lived for much of his life in the United Kingdom. He worked mainly in poster art, but was also active as a painter, book illustrator and theatre designer. In New York his commissions began with MOMA and he went on to produce war propaganda posters.[9] In 1947, he was approached to do a series of posters for American Airlines, which became his primary client until his death. In 1952, he designed what is perhaps his most famous work, the dust jacket art of Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man. He died two years later, in 1954. E. McKnight Kauffer (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., London in 1928. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original blue cloth with gilt titles. The book has a slight lean. Some dustiness to the upper text-block with some offsetting to the end-papers and light spotting to the prelims and text-block. Internally clean. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. It still retains its 'Advertisement' perforated rear flap. Some toning to the spine and light edge-wear with some nicks, small closed tears and slight losses at the upper spine and corners. The E. McKnight Kauffer wrapper artwork remains vibrant in the Brodart archival cover. A moment in publishing history as this was the very first title to be published by Victor Gollancz Ltd. The scarce wrapper designed by acclaimed graphic artist E. McKnight Kauffer is in exceptional condition for its age and has a pictorial design as opposed to the characteristic Gollancz yellow wrapper design which came into use at a later date. This copy inscribed a month before publication by Victor Gollancz to the front end-paper : 'A few copies of this the first book to be published by VG Ltd, have been given to friends of the House about a month before publication day (April 19th 1928). This copy is for Mr George, VG, 25.3.28.'. Mr George was a noted bibliophile. Gollancz went on to become a major publishing company supporting authors such as Daphne Du Maurier, George Orwell, Franz Kafka, John Le Carre et al. The characteristic 'VG' logo is present on the spine and I am inclined to think that this logo (which symbolised Gollancz publications) was also designed by E. McKnight Kauffer. No copies with wrappers are recorded on JSIC or on auction records for the last 50 years. The novel was the basis for the 1930 film 'The Right to Love', and was written shortly before Glaspell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama for her play 'Allison's House'. An important landmark title with such attributes. The book is housed in a custom. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcome direct contact. Kauffer, E. McKnight (wrapper artwork) (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
