[4pp] sewn into plain card wrappers with an integral yellow dust wrapper, lettered and decorated in black. With a McKnight Kauffer decoration to the front panel of the wrapper and another printed in three colours to the first leaf. The wrapper is split into two parts at the natural fold, and also lightly marked and dust soiled, and the whole is slightly creased. A good copy of Eliot's forty-three line poem, and the first of his two contributions to the Ariel Poets series (and second was 'A Song for Simeon' the following year, also with McKnight Kauffer illustrations). Card Covers. Zustand: Fine-. First Printing. One of 2,750 copies printed by the Spiral Press, with notes by Kauffer on technique and foreword by Aldous Huxley, of this catalog for an exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art from February 10 to March 7, 1937. Royal 8vo (254 x 191mm): 24pp, including 12 highlights, on 9 black-and-white plates, from the exhibit of 85 posters designed by Kauffer for London Underground, Great Western Railways, Shell, and other English clients. Stapled illustrated card covers screen-printed in French blue, black, and grey. About Fine, with minute wear to lower front cover edge, else virtually pristine. Scarce. Kauffer moved to London at the start of the First World War, and is probably best remembered for the 140 posters he created for London Underground (later London Transport), in many styles showing influences of futurism, cubism, and vorticism as well as impressionism and Japanese woodcuts. Why Huxley was chosen to contribute the very brief, rather incoherent forward (Kauffer painted Huxley's garden in Aix-en-Provence the year before this exhibition) would be interesting to know. N. B. Poster. Zustand: Good. A suite of three WWII posters, 20" x 14". Each poster has been mounted to a thin cardboard. With some creasing, and occasional small losses from the edges. The largest loss is from the top right corner of the "palabra" poster, measuring 4" x 3". The posters also have a general layer of light glue-staining. Three American WWII posters depicting the themes of Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom of Speech. These posters were meant to highlight Franklin D. Roosevelt's four freedoms (here three), and to sway Latin American opinion against Germany, Italy, and Japan. The Spanish text at the foot of each poster reads: "One of the 4 liberties for which the allies fight." Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) was an American artist and graphic designer who worked mostly in the realm of poster art. He was born in Montana, however he moved to England and became an expatriate. He was very influential in Europe, however he was only known in the United States by a handful of those well versed in the study of design. Interestingly, despite his obscurity in America, in 1937 the Museum of Modern Art gave him a prestigious one-man show. At the time of the exhibition, copy agents were continuing the tradition of using posters with romantic imagery, and only a few designers were able to gain any attention from breaking free of this type of imagery. Still remaining in obscurity, Kauffer returned to England, only returning to New York City after the war broke out in 1940. He only received honors in the United States posthumously, when he finally received an AIGA award. Russian born American artist Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971) was most known for holding the art director's position at Harper's Bazaar fashion magazine during the years of 1934-1958. Like Kauffer, Brodovitch played a significant role in introducing the United States to a substantially simplified modern design, already popular in Europe. While at Harper's, Brodovitch used art created by Man Ray, Salvador Dali, and A.M. Cassandre. Brodovitch received an AIGA award in 1987. Three boldly modern posters created by two artists who helped pioneer the modern poster in the United States, with its symbolic imagery and social relevance.…

FIRST EDITION, 36/75 COPIES, the title-page with woodcut device and a few small spots, ex dono inscription of Barbara Bagenal (see below) to the title-page, recording this as the gift (at Christmas 1918) of 'J.M.K. [i.e., John Maynard Keynes], pencil note at foot of 'The Cup' by Fry, this by Barbara Bagenal noting her having given said object to Duncan Grant in 1916 and that is was also painted by Vanessa Bell in 'Still Life of Roses', pp. [27], royal 8vo, original purple patterned boards (a hand-printed Omega design), worn, the spine largely perished (but the boards secure), edges untrimmed and toned, poor condition. A notable association: the copy of artist Barbara Bagenal (née Hiles), a friend of Carrington from the Slade who - alongside Winifred Gill and Gladys Hynes - assisted at Omega. Amongst her relationships within the Bloomsbury Group were Saxon Sydney-Turner and later Clive Bell - and she is noted as having been, prior to her marriage to Nicholas Bagenal (though that presumably needn't have been an obstacle), probably the first heterosexual partner of J.M. Keynes, whom she records this book as having been a gift from (in the year of her marriage, and his first acquaintance with Lydia Lopokova). Twelve cuts; the final publication of the Omega Workshops.…
